My older sister’s constant criticism makes me furious — I’m so tired of it
DEAR DEIDRE: MY older sister and I have never been close but now her constant criticism makes me furious.
Unfortunately we both live close to our family and share the same group of friends.
I feel like I am constantly walking on eggshells. I am 27 and she is 28.
Before lockdown she came out with our group of friends for the first time in years at the same time as me – it was a disaster.
She constantly belittled me in front of everyone, making me feel so embarrassed that I left early.
If ever a family member suggests I do something, she jumps on the bandwagon and starts backing them up and ganging up against me.
It’s like she thinks I am her project to fix. I’m getting really tired of it.

It will help you to start limiting the impact of her jibes.
You can tell her how much it hurts when she attacks you, but understand that this doesn’t mean she will change.
Dampen her criticism by changing the subject quickly and make the decision to rise above it.
She will soon get the message.
Have a read of my support pack Standing Up For Yourself. It explains other techniques to talk without arguing.
