Superman & Lois Had The Most-Streamed Series Premiere In CW History
The strong start of Superman & Lois continues, as the first episode of the series becomes the most-streamed premiere in The CW’s history. Based on the iconic DC Comics couple, with Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch stepping into the lead roles, the Arrowverse show has so far garnered praise and positive reviews for putting a different spin on one of the most familiar superheroes.
Superman & Lois begins as Clark Kent and Lois Lane return to Smallville with their two teenage sons Jordan (Alex Garfin) and Jonathan (Jordan Elsass). While the pilot episode did offer plenty of action, and the introduction of Emmanuelle Chriqui as Lana Lang, it was notable for speeding through the typical hallmarks of a superhero adaptation. Viewers are treated to a condensed version of Clark’s history, speeding through the milestones and life-changing moments, before the premiere settles into the more mundane troubles of job loss and the parental woes of raising two distinctly different boys. The approach has worked, by all accounts, as the audience for Superman & Lois has continued to build.
Deadline reports that Superman & Lois has earned the distinction of being the most-streamed series premiere ever for The CW. The show was watched by a total of 3.25 million total viewers since the premiere first aired on February 23. That’s according to Nielsen’s live-plus-seven measurement of ratings, which accounts for the viewership of a program over a seven-day period. Overall, the numbers reflect an 86% increase over the course of the seven days measured by Nielsen. Starting with episode 2, Superman & Lois will include additional footage when it becomes available on The CW app and the network’s streaming website. However, the additional footage featured in the streaming episodes will vary.
The CW’s satisfaction with Superman & Lois is evidenced in its quick season 2 renewal, echoing the formidable debuts of The Vampire Diaries and Arrow. Both series stormed out of the gate with strong numbers, maintaining that level of interest for several seasons and essentially shaping the rest of the network’s schedule. Superman & Lois could prove to have a similar influence, branching out to spinoffs of its own and raising the profile of its ensemble cast.
It’s too early, so far, to know for sure if the superhero adaptation will be able to hold steady or even potentially build on its impressive arrival. But between compelling performances and intriguing mysteries, Superman & Lois has the right components in place to resume its success. It’s a testament to the power of the central couple, in addition to the talent involved with the show, that such a recognizable premise feels fresh.
