I was so excited when I saw my sports presenter idol — but he told me to f*** off
DEAR DEIDRE: I WAS so excited when I spotted my idol.
But his reaction was awful – he told me to f*** off.
He’s a sports presenter and I bumped into him in a supermarket last year.
I tapped him on the shoulder and explained my career dreams, saying, “I’m trying to get into sports presenting. You’re my hero.”
But he swung around yelling “Get off me” and then swore.
I’m doing an online course in TV presentation but I still can’t stop thinking about his reaction.
I’m a man of 23 and he knocked my confidence.
He looked like he thought I’d hit him – but I wouldn’t hurt a fly.
He’s the reason I wanted to go into sports presenting.

DEIDRE SAYS: You had the best of intentions but perhaps he had been threatened before or had bad experiences with some other fans.
An unexpected tap on the shoulder may have triggered him into “fight mode”.
An “Excuse me . . . ” without touching him would have been a softer approach.
Please don’t let this one incident put you off fulfilling your dreams.
Put this down to experience and I hope we can see you on TV soon.
