Blossom Reboot Struggling To Get Green Light Says Mayim Bialik
Mayim Bialik says there has been a struggle to get a Blossom reboot greenlit. Created by Don Reo, Blossom was a highly influential young adult sitcom of the ‘90s. Starring Bialik as Blossom Russo, the series centers on Blossom as she struggles to navigate the trials and tribulations of being a teenager after her mother abandons the family to start a new life. Making its debut in 1991, the series ran for five successful seasons on NBC.
Pivoting Bialik’s career after she portrayed Bette Midler’s character as a young girl in Beaches, Blossom follows the girl-next-door who lives with her musician father and two older brothers, Tony and Joey (Joey Lawrence), and is often flanked by her fast-talking best friend Six (Jenna von Oÿ). Regarded as a coming-of-age series ahead of its time, Blossom featured the titular character often breaking the fourth wall with video diary entries. In 1995, Bialik signed off as her iconic character Blossom in a series finale that focused on change. Now, The Big Bang Theory star reveals she has wanted Blossom to return.
Speaking with EW to promote the debut of Blossom on Hulu, Bialik reveals she has been struggling for years to get a reboot greenlit by NBC. Bialik says:
I guess I'm allowed to talk about this now, Don Reo and I do have a limited reboot that we would like to do. We've had a lot of trouble getting our network onboard. It's been really fascinating. At a certain point, I may just start a grassroots fan campaign to see if we can do it because we absolutely would love people to see where these characters are. [Reo] and I talked about it and we kind of decided after literally years of trying to work on this that I would probably just say it out loud. We do have a well-formed idea and we would love someone to let us do it.
Following her run as Amy Farrah Fowler on The Big Bang Theory, neuroscientist Bialik has kept a packed schedule with the launch of her successful podcast Bialik Breakdown and a starring role in the new sitcom Call Me Kat. However, it appears the character of Blossom has remained at the forefront of Bialik's creative wheelhouse. Recently, NBCUniversal's Peacock has revived numerous properties from past decades, such as Saved by the Bell, Punky Brewster, and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. For this reason, it would serve as the ideal platform for a Blossom reboot. In fact, it's a little strange NBCUniversal isn't interested in the idea.
Indeed, Blossom was a staple of television viewing for teenage audiences during its time, and it may come as a shock for viewers of the series to hear there has been a struggle to move forward with a Blossom reboot, especially since the entertainment industry is immersed in an era of reboots and revivals. However, Blossom now being available on Hulu could drum up excitement for a revival, with Bialik's comments helping as well. If there's enough support, this could allow the star to finally bring Blossom back to life.
