The Legendary Rayquaza is coming back to Pokémon GO during the game's Weather Week, though it will only be available for capture during an extremely limited time period. Pokémon GO continues to thrive as one of mobile gaming's biggest draws, recording its most profitable year in 2020 despite developer Niantic needing to make major adjustments to the title's core gameplay features to help accommodate users stuck at home.
Part of the reason Pokémon GO has continued to thrive is its streamlined and consistent update process, which usually introduces events every few weeks (with some exceptions) and provides players with incentive to continue interacting with the app each day. The next event for Pokémon GO is Weather Week, which will run from March 24 to March 29. Therian Forme Tornadus will be available for the first time, while Shiny Rain Form Castform will also be available. While the event has some interesting mechanics, it didn't have the same kind of draw that other week-long celebrations with Legendaries tend to have for players.
That changed quickly when the Pokémon GO Live website provided an update on Weather Week earlier, announcing that Rayquaza will be making a surprise return to Pokémon GO. Rayquaza's return to Pokémon GO will see the Legendary Sky High Pokémon become available in five-star raids for a very limited time spanning Saturday, March 27, 2021 at 10am local time to Sunday, March 28, 2021 at 8pm local time. That's a small window to capture one of the most desirable Legendaries for many trainers, and there's a bonus: the Pokémon will appear alongside Therian Forme Thundurus, and will come with the Hurricane attack when caught during Weather Week.

Rayquaza coming back to Pokémon GO is a surprise, but it's a welcome one, given the Legendary Pokémon's rarity and general usefulness in-game. Rayquaza is a strong addition to player rosters with a high DPS output, and those who missed it earlier will now have a second chance to bolster their lineup. While it can be frustrating to miss out on a Legendary only for them to become one of the most powerful Pokémon GO team members, it's also worth noting that Rayquaza continues to rank highly in analyses, and at least power creep hasn't made the Sky High Pokémon's return less impactful.
With only a weekend to catch Rayquaza in Pokémon GO, expect trainers to be plenty busy in a few days. Pokémon GO Weather Week is bringing a lot to the game in a short time span, and while there will surely be bigger moments in store for the game in 2021 thanks to the Pokémon franchise's 25th anniversary, it's heartening for invested users to see even smaller events provide meaningful additions or returns.
