Slack Users Can Now DM Anyone: How It Works & Getting Started

0

Slack has become one of the go-to messaging apps for workplaces around the world, and as of March 24, 2021, Slack is now allowing users to send DMs to anyone outside of their specific workspaces. As it currently stands, Slack is primarily used for communicating with people inside a certain group or organization. A company creates a Slack workspace where all their employees can chat, only people that have been invited to the workspace can join, and it creates a safe and secure environment for people to get work done.

Then, in June 2020, Slack started to think outside of workspaces with Slack Connect — Slack's solution for allowing conversations with people outside of a workspace. Connect was pitched as Slack's solution for replacing traditional email, and as of March 2021, Slack says that over 74,000 paid customers are "relying on Slack Connect" for their business conversations (twice as many people as before). Now, Slack Connect is getting even more interesting.

Starting right now, Slack says that Slack Connect can now be used to send direct messages to anyone outside of a user's workspace. For example, if a salesperson needs to talk with a potential client, they can send a Slack DM invitation to that person's email address. Once the person views the email invite and accepts it, both parties can resume chatting right within Slack. Slack initially allowed these invites to be customized to show the initial message right within someone's inbox, but following concerns of that feature being abused, Slack now says that invites to join a Slack DM cannot be customized in any way.

To get started with DMing someone outside of a workspace, the process is actually quite easy. Click the 'Slack Connect' tab on the Slack application, click 'Start a direct message,' and enter the email address of the person to invite. Click 'Send Invitation' and that's all there is to it. Should that person choose to accept the invite, a new direct conversation will show up in Slack so both people can start chatting that way.

With a feature like this, there are some obvious pros and cons that come with it. As many individuals were quick to point out, sending a DM invite with a customized message meant people could send harmful/harassing messages to email addresses with there being no way of block it. Slack has since corrected that by revoking the option to customize the email invite, but it remains to be seen if that's enough for everyone to warm-up to the new feature.

Regardless of that initial backlash, though, it's easy to see this new addition to Slack becoming pretty widely used over the coming months. People are still working remotely, a lot of them already rely on Slack for their work communication, and being able to talk with employees, clients, PR contacts, etc. in one single app has the potential to be extremely powerful. Slack administrators can disable DM invites if they see fit, but this is bound to be a long-term play for Slack — even if it requires some additional tweaking here and there.
