Big Brother: Why Viewers Are Calling Janelle Toxic & Hypocritical
Viewers of Big Brother may consider Janelle Pierzina to be one of the greatest athletes of all time, but now Janelle is starting to earn a new reputation for herself. Many fans have been calling Janelle both toxic and hypocritical. Since her time on the All-Stars season this past summer, Janelle has had her differences with Nicole Franzel on numerous occasions. Janelle has not been afraid to speak her mind about their issues quite publicly.
Although they were once friends, there was much tension between Janelle and Nicole inside the Big Brother house this summer. When Janelle was evicted, Nicole originally planned to uninvite Janelle from her wedding during her goodbye message. However, Nicole ultimately decided to assure Janelle it was okay if she no longer wanted to come. Janelle has spoken badly on social media about Nicole numerous times. She recently left Twitter for a month before conveniently returning to the social media platform the same day as Nicole's wedding.
While most viewers of the show loved Janelle throughout her seasons, they are starting to think she is not so great outside the house. Fans on Reddit are calling Janelle toxic and hypocritical following her latest diss towards Nicole. Janelle's fans tend to praise her for the same actions she bashes Nicole for. In the past, Janelle has mocked Nicole for promoting different brand deals in an effort to gain followers. However, Janelle often does the same thing on her own social media. One user accused Janelle of being obsessed with Nicole. Her ongoing, mainly one-sided feud with Nicole has lasted nearly seven months, leaving fans exhausted and over it.
Janelle being toxic and hypocritical is nothing new to longtime Big Brother fans. However, for many years it has been overshadowed by her ability to compete. Since her time on the All-Stars season, these traits have come to light even more. Unfortunately, for so long, fans allowed Janelle to feel empowered by hating on other players because they truly admired her as a competitor. Janelle was perceived as "America's Sweetheart" during her early seasons on the show, allowing fans to gain a love for her. As social media became more and more popular, fans got to see Janelle's true colors outside of the show. One user noted, "You can appreciate Janelle as an entertaining television character while also acknowledging that someone who acts like that in their real life probably isn’t very nice."
There are definitely some double standards within the Big Brother fandom, especially regarding Janelle and Nicole. Nicole was bashed for having a mask-less wedding in Florida amid the pandemic. However, Janelle has freely traveled to numerous places with her family while also occasionally ditching her mask. Although Janelle may be seen as an iconic player on the show, outside of the show she may not be so iconic.
