GvK Star Demián Bichir Wants To See A Latin American Superhero

0

Godzilla vs. Kong star Demián Bichir really wants to see a Latin American superhero, citing a need for more representation. In recent years, Bichir has appeared in a number of high-profile projects, including Alien: Covenant and The Nun. Most recently, he appeared in the Tom Holland/Daisy Ridley film Chaos Walking, and he just boarded Showtime's upcoming Let the Right One In show. Bichir's latest film, the long-awaited and highly-anticipated Godzilla vs. Kong is just one week away from release. It marks Bichir's first MonsterVerse appearance and will debut both in theaters and on HBO Max.

In Godzilla vs. Kong, Bichir plays Walter Simmons, the founder and CEO of new company Apex. Whereas the Titan-studying Monarch has long been a part of the MonsterVerse, Apex is a new entity, and one that isn't exactly as heroic as its fellow organization. As a result, Walter is a mysterious character, and his motivations lie in a gray area. For Bichir, acting alongside two of cinema's greatest monsters is no small feat, but he also has an interest in another type of blockbuster.

Bichir recently sat down with Screen Rant to talk Godzilla vs. Kong, though we couldn't resist asking about some other genres he would like to try. When we asked if Bichir has any interest in venturing into the superhero realm, he responded with enthusiasm. At the same time, he was quick to call for more representation for Latin American heroes:

Demián Bichir: I love that world. I think it's really, truly spectacular what they do nowadays.

And I still think we need a Latin American hero. We need a Latin American type of superhero to enter this world. Maybe I just gave him a million dollar idea - billion of dollars idea, and I will be out of it anyway. But anyway, I won't claim my rights. I think we need that we need a larger, bigger representation. Look what happened to Black Panther.

Though the comic book genre has begun to make strides in terms of representation, there is still a long way to go. As Bichir mentioned, Black Panther did wonders when it arrived in theaters in 2018. It focused on a Black hero on a scale that had never really been done before and showed Hollywood just how important diverse stories can be. Since then, both the MCU and DCEU have added more diverse heroes to their rosters, but Bichir's comments serve as a reminder that many are still waiting for a hero of their own.

Certain Latino heroes are on the verge of appearing in the bigger comic book franchises within the coming years. On the Marvel side, Salma Hayek will play Ajak in Eternals later this year, and Xochitl Gomez is slated to portray America Chavez in 2022's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Beyond the MCU, a Blue Beetle movie is currently in development within the DCEU. These are just a handful of examples, but there is still more that can be done. Bichir would like to see a Latin American hero up on the big screen, and hopefully Hollywood will make that happen.
