[Tennis] Chevez, Weston Claim GPAC Tennis Honors
Doane Tennis picked up a sweep of the first Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Tennis Player of the Week honors. Jorge Chevez (JR/Panama City, Panama) received the men's honor while Amber Weston (FR/Mead, Colo.) was recognized with the women's honors.
Chevez went 4-0 in singles play while picking up three wins in doubles play. He started off the week in singles play with a win at Evangel, dropping only two games. Chevez capped off his week with two big wins in singles play. Against Bethel, he defeated the 50th-ranked player Michael Cech, 6-3, 6-2. He then picked up a win over NCAA Division II Emporia State.
Weston went 3-2 in singles play as well as doubles play. She posted two big wins on the week, defeating Karley Benson of Kansas Wesleyan, who was ranked No. 16 in the Central Region rankings. Weston added a straight-sets victory over NCAA Division II Truman State's Alex Rogers, 6-0, 6-3.
Both Doane tennis teams will open GPAC play this weekend with Northwestern before hosting McPherson (Kan.) on Sunday in a non-conference match.
