Turks stun Dutch as 2022 World Cup qualifying begins in Europe
March 25 – Turkey stunned the Netherlands with a Burak Yilmaz hattrick to win 4-2 in the opening round of 2022 World Cup qualifiers and leave the Dutch campaign in the doldrums.
The 35-year-old striker proved to be the Netherlands’ bogeyman yet again, torturing the Dutch defence from start to finish. In the 15th minute, his deflected shot wrong-footed visiting goalkeeper Tim Krul. He then converted a spot kick to hand the hosts a 2-0 lead within 35 minutes.
