Delegation led by Iraqi defense minister starts official visit to Armenia

A delegation led by Najah al-Shammari, the Iraqi minister of defense, on Wednesday arrived in Armenia on an official visit.
 
After a welcoming ceremony at the Defense Ministry Complex in Yerevan, Ministers al-Shammari and Vagharshak Harutyunyan held private talks which were followed by an extendend discussion.
 
According to an official press release summing up the meeting, the sides discussed the cooperation perspectives in the defense sector,  emphasizing the importance of partnership in a range of areas of mutual interest (exchange, regular poitico-military consultations and technical-military cooperation).

Also regional security issues were considered. Minister Harutyunyan briefed the Iraqi colleague on the situation in Armenia after the military operations in Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh) and the arrangements reached after their cessation.

The two ministers later signed an agreement on mutual intentions in the defense sector, outlining 13 areas of bilateral interest. The document envisages also the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Armenia and Iraq for developing cooperation in the defense sector.

The delegation led by the Iraqi minister visited the Armenian Genocide Memorial easrlier today to bow to the memory of the cannonized martyrs.
