Police: Man shot, killed after speaking with another man at door of south Austin home

AUSTIN (KXAN) — A man is dead after Austin police said a gunman shot him while they spoke at his front door Thursday.

In a tweet, police said they received a call at 12:18 p.m. about a man being shot at a home in the 1100 block of Kenyon Drive.

Police said officers found him with "severe injuries consistent with a shooting." He was pronounced dead at 12:27 p.m.

Witnesses said the victim, who lives at the home, had someone knock on his door. They had a conversation for about five minutes before the suspect opened fire on the victim, according to APD.

The gunman then left in a vehicle. Officers said both the victim and suspect are men in their 20s. Although the conversation was not overheard, police said witnesses told them it did not seem to be heated.

Investigators will remain on scene gathering evidence for several hours, police said. They also asked people to avoid the area if they can.

If anyone has information about what may have happened, they're encouraged to call APD's tip line at (512) 974-8477.

Kenyon Drive is between West Stassney Lane and West William Cannon Drive, and the 1100 block of the street is near Odom Elementary School.

The Austin Independent School District said the school was placed into "secure" mode from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. because of the police activity. Austin ISD police officers patrolled the campus and will stay through dismissal. The district said there's no threat to the school.
