Valheim Was the Top-Selling Steam Game For Two Months Straight
The Viking survival simulator game, Valheim has been hitting massive sales milestones, which is even more impressive as the game is still in Early Access. This week marks two months for the game sitting on top of Steam’s best selling chart. For eight weeks straight, the Early Access title has been selling consistently well and drawing in millions of players.
While Valheim is still pretty rough around the edges, with some basic looking textures and animations, the game's core is based on players surviving on a mythical island filled with ancient creatures and wild animals to be hunted. Players can craft weapons and build a home using the resources around them. Beginning with nothing but bare fists, players can build enormous fortresses and arm themselves to the teeth, taking on ancient deities and beasts in order to restore order to the afterlife or just mess around like some players have been. The choice is up to you.
According to Steam Database, Valheim has been sitting in the first place spot on Steam’s top 10 best sellers since February. This marks eight weeks in a row for the game, a milestone unheard of for even triple AAA titles, not to mention an Early Access game still in development with a long development road still ahead of it.
Two new games released this week have managed to make it into the Steam charts, with Subverse and It Takes Two. Subversive is the second of the newly added ‘Adults Only’ content to be added to Steam to make it onto the Steam bests-sellers chart, just behind HuniePop 2, taking the title of highest-ranked adult game so far. On the other hand, It Takes Two is another experimental game from EA and developer/director Josef Fares who was behind A Way Out – with both requiring two players to play the game.
Just how long Valheim can keep this streak going is the real story. A few games have popped up in the Steam charts during this time, but nothing has come close enough to dethrone the Viking indie title. Cyberpunk 2077 held the top spot in the Steam top sellers charts for 7 weeks. Fall Guys managed to hold out on 6 weeks. So far, Valhiem has attracted a player base of over 11 million in just two months based on Steam’s review numbers, with the highest concurrent players online so far – hitting 500,000. Gamers that are fans of survival crafting games or multiplayer sandboxes with crafting mechanics may come to learn that Valhiem is the perfect game to sink some hours into.
