Mortal Kombat 2021 LEGO Recreation Gives Fatalities A Brilliant New Twist

0

The trailer for the 2021 Mortal Kombat movie has been gloriously recreated in LEGO form. Created by Ed Boon and John Tobias, the fantasy-fighting saga began life as a series of video games. Developed and published through Midway Games, the first installment was released in 1992. Across the decades, a succession of sequels and spin-offs emerged on a variety of platforms. Initially stemming from an idea involving Jean-Claude Van Damme, the franchise came full circle when a film adaptation was released in 1995. It, too, spawned a direct sequel in the form of 1997's poorly-received Mortal Kombat: Annihilation.

Attempts to reboot the franchise have emerged and floundered ever since. In 2015, however, James Wan signed on to produce a new outing. Working from a script by Dave Callaham and Greg Russo, it was announced that Simon McQuoid would assume the director's chair. Increasingly anticipated by fans, a trailer full of R-rated action and mayhem was unveiled in February 2021. As well as taking social media by storm, the trailer served to break red-band records in terms of views. The footage spotlighted each of the film's characters — ranging from Lewis Tan's mysterious newcomer: Cole Young to such familiar figures as Liu Kang (Ludi Lin), Sonya Blade (Jessica McNamee), and Jax (Mehcad Brooks).

The trailer has since spawned countless pieces of fan art and the like. Taking things to a new level, however, the folks at Jekester opted to recreate the entire trailer in LEGO form. In total, the effort was comprised of a month of painstaking animating and editing. Using the movie's original audio, the video was released via Youtube on March 28, 2021. Capturing the spirit of the saga and retaining the blood-soaked action, the result is as hilarious as it is stunningly and imaginatively realized. Furthermore, it even included an original opening prologue that made light of Johnny Cage being infamously left out of Mortal Kombat 2021. Check it out below:

As fans will know, Mortal Kombat has always centered on a titular tournament that decides the fate of Earthrealm. Over the decades, however, a web of mythology was weaved not only into the backstories of each character but in the various feuds between them. Though packed with intense action, McQuoid has remained committed to honoring that. To that end, the rivalry between Scorpion and Sub-Zero will serve as the heart of the movie. Equally, Cole Young will be the audience surrogate and add intimately personal stakes — fighting not just to defeat the forces of Outworld but protect his family from assassins of the Lin-Kuei clan. Both elements of which were faithfully recreated in the above video.

Due to be simultaneously released in theaters and via HBO Max, it has remained as-yet how the movie will be received overall. As things stand, however, fans have remained extremely hyped to lay eyes on it. Equally, the first 13 minutes of Mortal Kombat have been widely praised. So promising have early reports been that plans are already in motion for future sequels. Such sequels would be able to see the aforementioned Johnny Cage introduced and the lore delved deeper into. For now, though, a diverse cast of talented, fight-trained actors, a subsequent promise of amazing battle sequences, and a respect for the games have been enough to hook fans. And thanks to such videos as the one above, Mortal Kombat will no doubt remain firmly in public consciousness right up until its release.
