Zachary Quinto Open To Returning As Spock In Future Star Trek Movies
Zachary Quinto says he’s open to returning as Spock in future Star Trek movies. Leonard Nimoy of course originated the role of Spock in Star Trek: The Original Series and the first run of Star Trek movies. But Quinto made the role his own when he took on playing the eminently logical Vulcan in J.J. Abrams’ 2009 Trek reboot.
That 2009 reboot of course led to a pair of Star Trek sequels, the last coming in 2016. But since the release of the second sequel Star Trek Beyond there has been nothing but confusion and doubt about the future of Trek as a movie franchise. For awhile it crazily looked like Quentin Tarantino might actually be the man to revive Star Trek, but his plans for an R-rated Trek movie now seem to be forever on hold. Others like Noah Hawley and S.J. Clarkson also found themselves reportedly attached to Trek projects that later went by the wayside. Indeed, late in 2020 reports circulated suggesting Paramount had canceled all future Trek movie plans. Then a few days ago Paramount injected Trek fans with new hope when out of nowhere they locked down a June 2023 release date for an untitled Star Trek movie.
It remains to be seen what new Star Trek movie project might be in the works with a release date in summer of 2023. If the plan is to bring back the cast of 2009’s Star Trek for a fourth go around, the studio will have no trouble convincing Quinto who says he’s down to play Spock one more time. Speaking to PopCulture.com, Quinto expressed his willingness to don his pointy Vulcan ears again:
“Honestly, I have no real idea what’s going on with Star Trek. [But] we all love each other and we all love that experience and I’m sure if it comes back around and we’re all available, I’m sure we’d be happy to jump back on board. No pun intended. But I don’t know — that’s in other people’s hands and I know I, for one, have had sort of moved on in terms of any kind of expectations, but you never know things come back in surprising ways and it’s surprising times, and it could be fun if it happens.”
Quinto also talked about the possibility of playing Spock in a future streaming series and didn’t slam the door on the idea, but did indicate that he doesn’t care to speculate on such things:
“I love that character. I love that world. I think there’s a lot of possibilities of storytelling in there and I’d certainly be open to any conversation, but it depends on the who, what, where when and how and why — and like all those questions that can only be answered in specifics, not necessarily hypothetically. So we’ll see.”
Spock obviously already has a presence in the Star Trek streaming universe thanks to Ethan Peck’s portrayal on Star Trek: Discovery. And Peck indeed will play Spock again in the upcoming Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. It’s hard to see Paramount and CBS creating yet another Spock series with Quinto playing the character this time, but if recent history has demonstrated anything, it’s to never say never when it comes to streaming series and their willingness to revive characters fans never thought they see again.
Though it sounds like Quinto might actually be willing to play Spock on the small screen were the circumstances to be right, what fans really want is for him and his Trek castmates to be reunited for one more movie. Unfortunately, beyond the release date Paramount just snagged for their mystery Star Trek film, there’s nothing to report when it comes to a possible Star Trek 4. Hopefully the studio will soon settle on an idea for another Star Trek movie, whether that idea comes from Tarantino, Abrams, Hawley or someone completely new to the mix. In the meantime, Star Trek lives on via Paramount+ and the multitude of Trek shows it features.
