Ghost of Tsushima Dev May Have Multiplayer Game in Development

0

Sucker Punch Productions, the development studio behind Ghost of Tsushima, is currently hiring for a Multiplayer/Network Programmer, which suggests the crew has an online game in the works. Ghost of Tsushima's stellar co-op component, Legends Mode, launched months after the core game hit store selves for PlayStation 4. The multiplayer offering managed to impress countless players, especially since microtransactions weren't involved.

At present, there's no word on what Sucker Punch plans to do next in terms of a new project. A job application for a Narrative Writer surfaced back in October 2020, however, asking that potential hires have an interest in stories about feudal Japan. Another listing from earlier in the year also indicated the team may once more explore adventures on the island of Tsushima. The posting in question was for a Combat Designer, specifically someone who played Ghost of Tsushima and understood its core combat system. Now there's reason to believe the crew intends to venture into online gameplay beyond the popular Legends Mode.

As spotted by Gaming Route, the "job" section of the Sucker Punch website features a relatively recent listing for a Multiplayer/Network Programmer. Most interesting is the post's note that whoever joins the team will play an instrumental role in bringing creativity to a "spectacular multiplayer game." The listing doesn't offer too much more in the way of concrete details, apart from a line that says the Programmer will "design and develop new features for our networking and multiplayer gameplay systems."

Given the popularity of Ghost of Tsushima's Legends, this doesn't seem to mean much at first glance. Hiring could either be underway for future support of the mode as it currently exists, for instance. However, the mention of a "spectacular multiplayer game" implies a new project of some sort is on the docket. Whatever the studio has planned, the team isn't yet ready to talk shop.

Sucker Punch and Sony launched Ghost of Tsushima last summer to widespread acclaim. Thanks to generally positive reviews and great word-of-mouth, the feudal Japan-set title has since sold over 6.5 million units worldwide. And Sony seems keen on further capitalizing on the game's popularity, evidenced by the announcement of a Ghost of Tsushima live-action film that John Wick director Chad Stahelski will helm.
