A blocked a punt that Tyler Scott returned for a touchdown in the final three minutes gives the Warriors a 25-24 victory that forces Serra to share the league crown.

MISSION HILLS — In the era of COVID-19, sports seasons have often been referred to with asterisks. How that asterisk is interpreted, though, is entirely up to those partaking in the season.
“We looked at this the whole time as spring football in pads,” said Bishop Alemany coach Casey Clausen. “It was a great opportunity for young guys to get experience. At the end of the day, we’re just happy that we got a chance, all the kids got a chance to play.”

Alemany secured a share of the Mission League title on Friday with a 25-24 win over Serra of Gardena, capping a five-game season that was abbreviated due to COVID-19.
It was a win that almost didn’t happen to end a season that almost didn’t happen. The Cavaliers (4-2) held a 24-17 lead heading into the fourth quarter, and were limiting the Warriors’ offense.
With three minutes left to play, the Alemany defense blocked a punt at the 50-yard line, and Tyler Scott scooped up the ball for a touchdown. After a successful the two point conversion, the Warriors (4-1) were ahead by a point.
“Excited we made a play, and obviously we were gonna win the game,” Clausen said. “Obviously, they were really good, so any time we can make a play, we’re gonna make a play.”
Alemany alternated quarterbacks, playing both Dylan Gebbia and freshman Anthony Wolter throughout the game. The latter had the Warriors’ only passing touchdown of the evening — a 31-yard strike to Ephesians Prysock at the start of the second quarter.
“I thought both guys played really well,” Clausen said. “Obviously, we have pretty high expectations here at Alemany in the position, but they both did some really good things and I’m excited for both their futures.”
Serra saw most of its production on offense on the ground, with Elijah Davis running for three touchdowns. Texas commit Maalik Murphy, a 6-foot-5 quarterback, went without a touchdown.
The Cavaliers recovered a fumble with four minutes remaining on the clock. The defense shifted the momentum in Serra’s favor one last time before Alemany capitalized on the blocked punt, something it’s impossible to put an asterisk on.
“I’m excited the kids got an opportunity to play, number one,” Clausen said. “We had fun tonight, played a real good team, and excited we had that opportunity at the end.”
