The New York Mets have activated third baseman J.D. Davis (hand contusion) from the 10-day injured list prior to their doubleheader against the Colorado Rockies on Saturday, the team announced.
In order to make room for Davis, the Mets optioned infielder Jose Peraza to their alternate site in Brooklyn. The team will also go with left-handed pitcher Stephen Tarpley as their 27th man on the roster for today’s doubleheader.
Davis was struck on the hand with a pitch on April 7 during the Mets’ opening series against the Philadelphia Phillies. However, due to the several postponements as a result of inclement weather, Davis only missed a total of six games for the Amazins.’
Now, the 27-year-old is expected to slide back into the Mets lineup as the starting third baseman. Infielders Jonathan Villar and Luis Guillorme have split time at the hot corner in Davis’s absence, but will both likely lose playing time upon his return.
Guillorme, who is known as a defensive whiz, has gone 4-for-11 to start the year, with four walks at the plate. While Villar drove in two key runs, including a walk-off hit, in Tuesday’s doubleheader sweep of the Phillies.
The Mets’ offense is starting to find its rhythm and if Davis can replicate anything close to the production he endured in his 2019 campaign (.307, 22 home runs, 57 RBIs), it would make New York’s lineup that much scarier.
