Opinion: Despite Cancellations, Mets Will be Fine

After their sixth cancellation of the Mets’ season, they arrived in Denver, Colorado to a practical snowstorm on Thursday, with Kevin Pillar joking, “What are we, the Green Bay Packers?” As fun as the snow was, though, any Mets fan who’s even loosely paid attention this season could likely guess at how it might affect the Mets’ series against the Rockies scheduled for this weekend.

And the snow wasted no time, as Coors Field was covered in snow on Friday, which the Mets Twitter account posted. Soon after, the Mets received their seventh cancellation of the season, with a doubleheader scheduled for Saturday starting at 5:10 p.m. ET. And that seems to fit the theme of this season so far: wherever the Mets go, their games keep getting canceled for one reason or another. First it was COVID-19 issues, then it was rain and now it’s snow. It seems as though the Mets can’t catch a break.

When they take the field on Saturday, they will have played just one nine-inning game in the last week. Understandably, many fans have started to get antsy, watching from afar as all the other teams play and the Mets sit on the sidelines.

But there really is no reason to fret, Mets fans. The team will be just fine. While there’s been some talk about disrupting rhythm and whatnot, I’m not terribly concerned about that, especially considering how long the season is and how early we are into it. I’m not completely negating the concept of teams getting into a rhythm, nor am I denying that the Mets haven’t been given the chance to do so, but let’s be real here. The Mets have played eight games. Eight! Out of 162. By game 20 or so we likely will have forgotten all about this.

It’s a long season. The Mets will have plenty of chances to get into rhythms. They will have winning streaks, losing streaks and everything in between; that’s the nature of a 162-game season.

And even with all the early cancellations, the Mets have managed to win their last three games and sit in first place atop the NL East. They’re a talented team that’s going to win baseball games regardless. And especially in the long term as everything evens itself out, a team with a roster this loaded is not going to magically become terrible just because their schedule got a little disrupted.

Mets fans have so much to be excited about, and shouldn’t let a few rainouts ruin their mood as they venture into this wildly exciting 2021 season under the helms of new owner Steve Cohen. We’re getting the first tastes of superstar Francisco Lindor, who Mets fans are going to be seeing in orange and blue for the next 11 years. Brandon Nimmo is off to a red-hot start, as is Dominic Smith. And Pete Alonso, Jeff McNeil and Michael Conforto will be just fine.

Oh yeah, and the Mets still have the best pitcher in baseball in Jacob deGrom, who will be taking the mound for the Mets’ first game on Saturday.

So don’t hit the panic button yet, Mets fans. The team has a stacked roster, is in first place and has practically an entire season ahead of them. Just enjoy the ride and everything will work itself out.
