This Connecticut teacher was trying to help his neighbors with groceries, but when he raised over $40,000 on Facebook, he ended up with a $16,000 tax bill
Louis Goffinet, a 27-year-old middle school teacher from Mansfield, started helping his neighbors by going to the grocery store for them last April because they were afraid to or had health concerns. More people needed his help and he decided to start a Facebook fundraiser. The response was dramatic and by the end of the year, Goffinet had raised over $41,000 and helped hundreds of families. But that came with a price: now Goffinet owes $16,000 in taxes on the money he raised.
