Prep basketball: Rohosy, Winters lead Marin Catholic to win over San Marin

0

In the second game of the night at San Marin, the Marin Catholic boys defeated the Mustangs 57-47 behind a combined 41 points from AJ Rohosy and Kyle Winters to open their season with a solid win.

Rohosy scored 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds while Winters had a team-high 22 points to go with six rebounds and three steals.

After a tight first quarter, the Wildcats (1-0) held the Mustangs (0-2) to just three points in the second quarter to take a 26-15 lead into the break before pulling away with a run midway through the third, led by the aforementioned duo.

“It was just exciting,” Winters said of his first high school game since early March of 2020. “We really wanted to get back out here in a really meaningful game. They’ve given us trouble in the past but we really just wanted to come out and prove a point, come out strong and show that we’re one of the best teams in the county, best teams in NorCal.”

Despite their best efforts, the Wildcats could not slow down San Marin star guard Tyson Geraci. The Chico State-bound senior guard scored a game-high 24 points, 17 of which came in the second half. All night he faced multiple defenders and relentless in-your-jersey pressure from a handful of different Wildcats but none could find a way to stop him from putting the ball in the hoop.

“He’s a fabulous player,” said Marin Catholic head coach Mike Saia. “The Geraci legacy, we couldn’t stop all three of them. I’m going to his graduation to make sure he graduates.”

Geraci scored 12 of his team’s 15 points in the third quarter when the Mustangs started to make things interesting. Geraci opened the half with a couple tough layups to bring the deficit to eight, but the Wildcats responded with an 11-2 run mainly on the backs of Rohosy and Winters, who combined to score 15 of Marin Catholic’s 18 points in the third.

San Marin went to the fourth trailing by 14 and nearly cut it single digits again but an 8-0 run from the Wildcats, capped by a jumper from Nick Greenwood, pushed the lead to 19 with four minutes left.

Greenwood finished with five points and dished out a team-high five assists.

Despite the 0-2 start, San Marin head coach Pat Fahy is not worried about his team in the early going.

“I have no doubt the team we have can hang with any team in this league and any team in this area,” he said. “No doubt about it, we just have to put it together. Second game, we’ve had six, seven days of practice with contact. I mean we’re just trying to get it all together. We didn’t have any scrimmages so this is kind of our first two games to figure it out and we’re getting there.”
