DC’s Green Lantern Show Casts AHS Star As Guy Gardner
DC's Green Lantern HBO Max TV series casts American Horror Story star Finn Wittrock to play the heroic Guy Gardner. Although Warner Bros. and DC have spent the last several years trying to develop a new Green Lantern Corps movie, the immediate future of the superpowered space cops is on the small screen. Arrowverse producer Greg Berlanti began developing a Green Lantern series for HBO Max in 2019.
The Green Lantern show will consist of 10 hour-long episodes with Seth Grahame-Smith serving as the showrunner. It will feature multiple Green Lanterns in an anthology-style narrative that spans decades. Some of the confirmed Lanterns to appear in Green Lantern include the Golden Age Green Lantern Alan Scott and more recent additions to the groups' ranks like Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz. With reports that HBO Max wants to start filming Green Lantern this summer, the series has finally found one of its lead actors.
According to Variety, Finn Wittrock will play Guy Gardner in Green Lantern. The report describes Gardner as a "hulking mass of masculinity" and "an embodiment of 1980s hyper-patriotism." It is unknown how many episodes Wittrock will appear in as Guy Gardner. The actor is best known for his role in American Horror Story. Guy's story will reportedly begin in 1984 with a half-alien Lantern named Bree Jarta.
Guy Gardner first appeared in the pages of DC Comics in 1968 when John Broome and Gil Kane introduced him in Green Lantern #59. He was considered to be Earth's Green Lantern instead of Hal Jordan, but Hal was chosen because he was closer to Abin-Sur's crash site. It took several years for Gardner to eventually get a Power Ring of his own, where his willpower and unwillingness to back down from a fight helped make him one of the Green Lantern's best members. Although he can be cocky at times, Guy is still likable. He has also served as a member of the Justice League, the Red Lantern Corps, and the Star Sapphire Corps at different points in the comics.
The role of Guy Gardner in Green Lantern will be Wittrock's first superhero role. Although he might not have the natural red hair of Guy Gardner, Wittrock has shown great talent through his years on American Horror Story and other performances. It should be fun to see him take on this role and bring the arrogant Lantern to life. And since Guy Gardner hasn't been seen in live-action before, Wittrock won't have the added pressure of living up to past iterations of the character. Now fans will have to wait and see who else is cast in Green Lantern prior to the start of production.
