Snap elections: Republican seeks political alliance with Homeland party
The former ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) will team up with the opposition Homeland party (NSS) in joining the campaign for the June 20 parliamentary election.
The decision to seek an electoral alliance with the political force led by Artur Vanetsyan. a former director of the National Security Service (NSS), was made by RPA Executive Board Thursday.
The meeting chaired by third President Serzh Sargsyan, the party's longtime leader, focused on the domestic political situation and a range of regional developments dealing with the interests of Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) and Armenia.
An exchange of views unfolded also over the Republican's attitude to the snap elections, and the expediency and possible format of its participation in the processes. The party made the decision to form a political alliance for joining the nationwide voting "considering the vital imperative of unseating the capitulator [i.e. - Nikol Pashinyan, currently the acting prime minister], as well as the importance of investing all the means and efforts towards achieving that end and the latest developments on the opposition front," the Executive Board said in a statement released after the meeting.
Criticizing the current authorities as a "regime of conspirators" pursuing anti-constitutional, illegal, autocratic and repressive policies, the RPA members also warned also of possible actions towards legitimating the entire process.
