Dave Bautista says that Drax won’t die in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 but believes that he should be recast instead for future Marvel projects.
Dave Bautista says that Drax won’t die in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 but that he should be recast instead. Drax was introduced in the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie that came out in 2014. Since then he went on to become a lovable comic relief character that audiences laughed with over the years. He has been in a total of four Marvel movies at his point including the first two Guardians of the Galaxy films, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame. Bautista has become an integral part of the MCU and it would be hard to imagine his turn as the character ending any time soon.
However, in a recent interview, Bautista was asked about his future in the MCU and talked about how much the future of the Marvel Universe had changed. He mentioned how other than a Drax and Mantis movie being pitched to him by director James Gunn, he had not heard much about the future of his character beyond Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Bautista said that this was "Probably going to be the end of Drax."
Many MCU fans were disappointed to hear this news prompting Bautista to clarify his statements in a recent Tweet. He stated that Drax wasn't going anywhere and he meant that if Marvel Studios decided to continue with the character then it will likely be played by another actor following Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. His reason for leaving the role is due to his age, mentioning that he would be 54 years old by the time the last Guardians movie releases. "I'm expecting everything to start sagging any second now", he said jokingly on Twitter.
If Drax were to be played by another actor following Bautista's departure then that would be strange given that none of the other Guardian actors have talked about leaving. It is hard to imagine the Guardians of the Galaxy with the original cast minus Bautista. Either Marvel takes a break from more Guardians movies or Gunn finds a way to convince Bautista to stay.
It is also possible that Marvel could find a way to say goodbye to Drax without killing him at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. That would explain his absence in future projects. Regardless, the fact that even Bautista is unsure about his future in the Marvel universe might signify how massively Marvel's plans might have been changed. This could be due to either the pandemic or Gunn's temporary firing which did delay the last Guardians of the Galaxy film. For now, audiences will at least see Drax twice more, firstly in the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special and then lastly in Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3.
