Rock of Love: The Show's Best Moments (And Why We Need a Reboot)
Fans of Rock of Love are wishing for a reboot of the early '00s reality TV series. and we're here to explain why they are missing the show. This competition series pitted a houseful of female Poison fans against one another. The women were trying to win the heart of '80s hair metal icon Bret Michaels. Featuring former MTV VJ-turned-VH1 personality Riki Rachtman as host, the show had The Bachelor vibes. Rock of Love ran for three seasons, from 2007 to 2009. It had crazy reunions that kept the catfights coming.
The show featured a bachelor pad full of women and Bret Michaels made sure the home had 24-hour monitoring. The Poison frontman, who went on to dress up as a Banana on The Masked Singer, enlisted the help of his own security professional, Big John. Big John made sure the contestants followed the rules. The first two seasons welcomed the contestants into Bret's place, while the final season took the show on the road. The wild and crazy antics made for entertaining television. Viewers kept coming back to see if Bret would be lucky in love. Some of the contestants managed to gain some exposure themselves. Rock of Love sparked two spinoff shows (Daisy of Love and Meghan Wants a Millionaire) over ten years, and later reruns of the original show can still be streamed.
The first season of Rock of Love resulted in an intense showdown between the final two women. Ultimately, Bret chose pink-haired Jes over '80s-inspired Heather. However, season one brought viewers way more unbelievable memories than those final moments. Who could forget when Heather decided it was a good idea to get "Bret" inked on the back of her neck, as her first tattoo ever? The inaugural season saw house villain Lacey antagonize contestants, including Dallas, before forming alliances with her competitors. Thinking her rocker-girl attitude and singing style would make her a shoo-in for Bret's heart, Lacey found herself the third-to-last woman standing. Her world came crashing down when Bret uttered those fateful words, "Your tour ends here." Bret, who also appeared on The Apprentice (there is talk that Trump will reboot the show), broke some hearts on Rock of Love.
When Jes admitted to the Reunion 1 cast that Bret should have chosen Heather, it was clear a second season was imminent. Bret headed back to the pad for another round of drunk women pleading, "Talk Dirty to Me." The females showed up in full force, ready to do almost anything to prove why they should be his plus-one. When Bret's final decision came down to another set of women in their twenties and thirties, fans noticed that Bret preferred maturity, and 37-year-old TV host Amber beat out 23-year-old exotic dancer Daisy for bragging rights.
Rock of Love Bus was the third and final installment of the series, which saw Mr. Michaels paired up with Penthouse "Pet of the Year 2009," Taya Parker. The competition was stiff for her. However, Bret choosing Taya was a no-brainer. With her stunning looks, family ties to the music industry, and singing (which barely trumped all of the others in a comical vocal challenge), it was no surprise that she was the apple of Bret's eye.
Bret's relationship with Taya fizzled soon after the show wrapped and he is currently on the market. As recently as 2020, Bret expressed interest in a Rock of Love reboot, which would have a modern-day spin. Describing his vision for the show in an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Bret pitched the idea of a masked dating competition, where personality would take precedent over physical attraction. Clearly, this would only work with another rocker replacing Bret. Viewers would definitely have a great time figuring out who the popular celeb behind the mask was.
Rock of Love is currently streaming on Hulu.
