Memphis Grizzlies vs. Toronto Raptors News and Notes

With the Raptors’ playoff hopes all but dead, Toronto can still play spoiler with their old former Canadian team rival.

The once upon a time Vancouver Grizzlies are clinging to the ninth seed in the west, just a game up on former Raptor DeMar DeRozan’s San Antonio Spurs. Memphis had a golden opportunity to move closer to Golden State in eighth but dropped a 111-97 decision to the lowly Pistons on Thursday. 

The Grizzlies remain a half-game back of the Warriors after allowing Detroit to beat them without having a 20-point scorer on the night. Ja Morant led Memphis with exactly 20 in the loss while Jonas Valanciunas double-doubled with 19 points and 16 boards. The other three starters combined for 16 in a crucial loss to the east’s worst team.

Memphis has dropped five of seven, including a defeat by the second-worst team in the Eastern Conference, the Orlando Magic, a week ago.

Toronto is coming off their fifth loss in six games in a contest that would have at least made their last week of the season more interesting had they pulled out the win.

The Raptors forced overtime in the dying seconds against the team they are chasing for the east’s final play-in spot on Thursday but couldn’t complete the comeback.

Fred VanVleet hit three of his 22 points to tie the game with 1.3 seconds left, but the Wizards outscored the Raps by two in the extra frame to pull four games up on Toronto with five left.

Pascal Siakam tied his career-best with a game-high 44 points, while Gary Trent Jr. returned from a six-game absence to put up 25 in the defeat.

The team’s third-leading scorer and top assist man, Kyle Lowry, missed his second straight and will also be rested on Saturday. OG Anunoby will join Lowry on the bench to miss his fourth in a row with a calf issue while VanVleet will be rested. 

Rookie guard Malachi Flynn should start and see a significant boost in minutes against the Grizzlies.

Memphis is 7-1 against the spread following a loss of ten or more but covered just two of their past seven. The Raptors are 5-0-1 ATS at home and 3-0-1 in their past four overall. Toronto has gone over five of six as a home dog while the Grizzlies went high in six of seven against teams with a losing home record. Memphis is 1-9-1 ATS in their past 11 against the Dinos, and they’ve gone under in 31 of 41 head-to-head meetings.
