How I Met Your Mother Meets Schitt’s Creek: 5 Couples That Would Work (& 5 That Wouldn’t)

What if the characters from How I Met Your Mother went to Schitt’s Creek, the small town in Canada? When the characters of these two beloved sitcoms meet, are there relationships that would work better than Lily and Marshall or David and Patrick?

Schitt’s Creek aired a decade after How I Met Your Mother premiered and the characters live in entirely different regions hailing from diverse backgrounds. But there would still be a possibility that all of these incredible people could either make some very interesting couples or simply not work altogether.

10 Would Work: David & Barney

While their sexualities don’t really match in these two beloved sitcoms, David and Barney would be a match made in heaven if the characters of these shows met. Both of them are found of having a great deal of worldly experience and knowledge of fashion.

David’s costumes and Barney’s suits are definitely some of the most striking features of the shows. Barney would be a supportive partner helping David build his business, and David would help Barney figure out his many redeeming qualities.

9 Would Not Work: Ted & Alexis

Alexis is known for her free spirit and spontaneity, whereas Ted is a meticulous planner. It would definitely bore Alexis to be with Ted, who is systematic and has planned out every event in his future.

Alexis prefers going with the flow, which would make their approach towards life very different. Although both of them are very kindhearted and lovable characters, their relationship wouldn’t work out.

8 Would Work: Marshall & Twyla

Marshall stands as the symbol of kindness and selflessness in How I Met Your Mother, and Twyla brings these same attributes to Schitt’s Creek. The two of them would make a very lovely pair with their free spirits enabling them to build their relationship.

It also has to be noted that the two of them have a bunch of abstract beliefs, and these discussions would be a treat to watch for the audience.

7 Would Not Work: Robin & Ted Mullens

Robin and Ted are two individuals who prioritize their careers over other things. The fans see both of them ending their relationship with their partners as their jobs kept them apart.

Robin’s dream to travel worldwide as a reporter and Ted’s goal to find new species at the Galapagos island would never let their relationship work.

6 Would Work: Lily & Moira

Moira and Johnny form a perfect pair as Johnny always acts as the voice of reason for Moira’s extravagant ambitions. The viewers have seen Lily stepping up as the voice of reason in How I Met Your Mother when Marshall goes crazy.

Although this might look like an unlikely pairing, Lily has similar qualities as Johnny, where they take part in all their partner’s mischief but at the same time pull them down to reality.

5 Would Not Work: Marshall & Stevie

Marshall and Stevie are totally different people who have a very contrasting view of the world. Marshall was raised by his parents in Minnesota, a countryside where people believed in and cared for each other.

On the other hand, Stevie had a troubled childhood and hence held a cynical outlook on the world. They are very caring people but would not work as a couple. Furthermore, Stevie is a private person, whereas Marshall is not afraid to express his emotions.

4 Would Work: Stevie & Robin

Stevie and Robin had a troubled childhood that makes them look at the world in a cynical way. These two independent women would have each other’s backs whenever the other needs it.

Robin and Stevie are both very private and don’t communicate their emotions very well with others, not even their close friends. This pairing up would provide them with someone of a similar nature who'd understand the other really well and will produce a perfect relationship.

3 Would Not Work: Johnny & Lily

Johnny is a person of reason, and so is Lily. However, both of them like to be the sole decision-maker in a group, and this could result in a conflict between the two if they are a couple.

Marshall and Moira are two people who expand their thinking to abstract ideas beyond reasoning. Lily forms a good pair with Marshall, and Johnny leads a happy life with Moira as they are the ones in the group who pull down their partner to reality.

2 Would Work: Patrick & Ted

The sitcom world almost gave up its pursuit to find a ‘romantic’ that could be matched with Ted Mosby until Season 3 of Schitt’s Creek aired. Patrick’s unconditional love and support for David were some of the most wholesome things on the show.

Patrick and Ted would be able to reciprocate their feelings to each other in the most romantic way. Even their romantic gestures matched when both of them bought a house to live with their partner or hosted an event to cheer up their mate. With their earnest commitment to relationships, Patrick and Ted would form a great pair.

1 Would Not Work: Marshall & Moira

Marshall and Moira are two characters in the shows that live far away from reality. Moira was unwilling to change her lifestyle despite losing all the wealth.

Fans see Marshall acting in a very similar fashion, holding onto the past, whenever he is confronted with such scenarios as he did after his father’s death. They need a Johnny or Lily to ground them to reality; together, they would probably implode.
