Suicide Squad 2 Features Music From Two of James Gunn’s Favorite Artists
James Gunn, director of the upcoming DC film The Suicide Squad, has recently teased the soundtrack for his new film by saying it features two of his favorite new artists. Gunn was quickly snatched up by Warner Bros. to helm the DC film of his choice when he was first fired from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 by Disney after some controversial old tweets had surfaced in 2018. Since then, Gunn has been welcomed back onto the Marvel threequel, which begins filming later this year, but before that his Suicide Squad sequel/soft reboot is slated to hit cinemas in August.
Given the freedom to work on several potential other DC comic book films, Gunn ultimately set his sights on a follow up to David Ayer’s 2016 Suicide Squad. Ayer’s first film, which received mixed reviews, focuses on a group of incarnated villains-turned-antiheroes being forced to work for the secret government agency A.R.G.U.S. in exchange for reduced prison sentences. Set to return for Gunn’s movie are the original cast members Margot Robbie, Viola Davis, Joel Kinnaman and Jai Courtney, who will also be joined by multiple newcomers including Peter Capaldi, Idris Elba, Michael Rooker, Nathan Fillion, David Dastmalchian, Pete Davidson, and the voice of Sylvester Stallone.
Taking to Twitter, James Gunn offered a tease about what to expect from the film’s soundtrack, saying that one of his “favorite current musical artists wrote & recorded a song for #TheSuicideSquad & I feel like I’m standing so close to a pop classic that it’s burning my brain.” He shortly followed up by saying “it actually features TWO of my favorite new artists who I’ve professed love for in the past.” Check out the original tweets below:
The importance of music has been a big feature of James Gunn’s work as a filmmaker, and nowhere is this more evident than his iconic soundtrack choices for the Guardians of the Galaxy films. Indeed, so important were Gunn’s musical picks that the Russo brothers had him decide which song would introduce the Guardians for their first appearance in Avengers: Infinity War. More recently, when a fan asked about his choice of music for the upcoming Peacemaker spin-off series, he replied that the soundtrack for the show was “super-awesome tbh, might be my favorite mix ever.”
It is certainly interesting that the soundtrack for The Suicide Squad is planned to feature more original music than his Guardians films, but with Gunn responsible for picking the tunes they will likely be the most delightful kind of ear candy. There is currently no concrete word which two musical artists he may be referring to, so fans are tripping over themselves trying to guess who they may be. Thankfully, it will not be too much longer until the mystery is revealed and everyone gets to find out for themselves, with The Suicide Squad set to release in theaters and on HBO Max on August 6th.
