DENVER — Shohei Ohtani gave the fans a show in the Home Run Derby, but not a victory.
Entering the Derby as the No. 1 seed and the No. 1 attraction, Ohtani lost an epic duel against the Washington Nationals’ Juan Soto in the first round on Monday night in the thin Rocky Mountain air at Coors Field.
They were dead even after four minutes of swings in regulation and another minute of an overtime round. That sent the matchup to a three-swing tie-breaker. Soto hit homers on all three of his swings, and Ohtani then topped a ground ball on his first, ending the matchup.
New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso ended up winning his second straight Home Run Derby, beating Baltimore Orioles first baseman Trey Mancini in the final.
Although Ohtani was in the clubhouse when it ended, he still seemed pleased with his experience.
“It was fun,” Ohtani said through his interpreter, flashing a broad smile as reporters crowded around him in a tunnel outside the clubhouse.
One round of rib-jarring swings was still quite a workout for a guy who is also going to be the starting pitcher for the American League in Tuesday’s All-Star Game. No pitcher has ever competed in the Home Run Derby before.
Truth to be told, it wasn’t such a bad thing that Ohtani didn’t advance, considering the other physical demands he faces.
“A lot more tired than during the season, for sure,” Ohtani said.
And to recharge for his performance in the game on Tuesday: “I’m just going to get as much sleep as I can,” Ohtani said. “That’s all I can do.”
Ohtani was expected to be hitting a little longer, for as much as anyone can make predictions in a Home Run Derby. As the major league home run leader with 33, he got the top seed and a matchup against the bottom seed, Soto.
The Nationals’ 22-year-old star put the pressure on Ohtani, though.
He blasted 22 homers in his first four-minute round, including a 520-foot shot into the top deck in right field. Soto also sprayed homers all around the field, while most of the competitors mostly pulled the ball.
Ohtani then got off to a bad start. He started out hitting low line drives and didn’t hit his first homer until 50 seconds had gone by, putting only five balls over the fence before calling a timeout with 1 minute, 19 seconds to go in his three-minute session.
Ohtani then got into a rhythm and hit another 11 homers in the last 79 seconds. He had earned the extra minute by virtue of hitting at least two balls over 475 feet.
Before Ohtani stepped back into the box, Angels teammate Jared Walsh brought Ohtani a phone.
Mike Trout was calling for a brief pep talk.
“I was gassed so I can’t remember fully, but I think he just said relax and be yourself,” Ohtani said.
Ohtani then hit six more homers, tying Soto on his second-to-last swing.
“The last 30 seconds of both rounds were really exhausting,” Ohtani said. “I was gassed.”
Each player got an extra minute, and both hit six more homers, sending the match to the swing-off, which is where Soto ended it.
All told, Ohtani hit 28 homers, including 15 that traveled 475-plus feet and six that were measured at 500 feet or more. His longest was 513 feet. The total distance of his homers was 2.46 miles.
Soto’s upset over Ohtani actually fit the pattern, with all four of the first-round matchups going to the lower-seeded player.
Mancini and Colorado Rockies shortstop Trevor Story each went first in their matchups, but their competitors – Oakland A’s Matt Olson and the Texas Rangers’ Joey Gallo, respectively – each came up one homer shy.
Gallo came into the event as the No. 2 seed, just behind Ohtani.
Alonso began his title defense in grand style by swatting a first-round record 35 homers to knock off Kansas City Royals catcher Salvador Perez. The fourth-seeded Perez finished with 28 homers, which would have won the previous two first-round matchups. Alonso’s burst was the most in the first round, topping the 28 by Josh Hamilton at original Yankee Stadium in 2008. In the semifinals, Alonso topped Soto, 16-15, while Mancini defeated Story, 13-12.
Alonso became the third back-to-back Home Run Derby champion, going 6 for 6 in a 28-second stretch to give him 23 homers in the final round after Mancini hit 22.
“I’m the best power hitter on the planet,” Alonso proclaimed after winning. “Being able to showcase that and put on a fun display for the fans is truly a dream come true for me.”
The 26-year-old Alonso joins Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr. (1998-99) and Yoenis Céspedes (2013-14) as the only players to win two straight. Alonso has one distinction, though – his titles are over three seasons. There wasn’t an event last season due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Mancini, who missed the 2020 season while undergoing chemotherapy for stage 3 colon cancer, knew topping Alonso would be difficult.
“He’s hitting balls over 500 feet with ease. It didn’t seem like he got too tired and I got pretty gassed in that last bonus round,” Mancini said. “He’s a beast out there.”
Alonso earned $1 million – more than his $676,775 salary. He’s made $2 million in Home Run Derby winnings compared to about $1.47 million in career salary from the Mets through the end of this season.
“My parents let me stay up past my bedtime to watch this,” he recalled. “That was one of the few nights of the year I got to stay up past of my bedtime and watch. Watch incredible feats you don’t see in a regular baseball game. To be able to do back to back is really special to me.”
