The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke is celebrating season 2, being nominated for a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Drama with a Love Sausage joke. The Amazon show is based on the comic book series of the same name from Preacher creator Garth Ennis, set in a world where superheroes exist but are corrupt and abuse their powers. Following a tragic demise, former SAS operator Billy Butcher puts together the titular team to deliver vigilante justice against the various "heroes."
Development on an adaptation of The Boys first began in 2008 as a film at both Columbia and Paramount Pictures until it was pivoted to a series at Cinemax with Kripke, Evan Goldberg, and Seth Rogen attached. Shifting towards Amazon, the series became a smash hit, garnering substantial viewership numbers for the streaming platform and quickly being renewed for season 2 that aired in late 2020 and season 3 ahead of the prior's premiere. The series also saw rave reviews from critics and audiences alike, though it's now become the next chapter in a significant landscape change for the comic book genre.
This morning brought the announcement of titles nominated for statues from this year's Primetime Emmy Awards, with The Boys scoring its first nod for Outstanding Drama Series. The world of comic books in film and television has often been overlooked by prestige awards ceremonies outside of production categories. However, the latter finally saw a shift, with Damon Lindelof's Watchmengarnering the most Emmy nods of 2020 with 26 and winning 11. While season 1 of The Boys was plenty beloved by fans and critics alike, season 2 has proven to be the chapter that drew the attention from the Emmy voters. Paired with WandaVision's eight nominations and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier's one nod, the comic book genre is finally getting its proper recognition and to see Kripke's excitement for the attention is just as appealing for fans as for the showrunner himself.
Though the Emmy voters may not have focused on the "ten-foot d-ck" Kripke refers to in his post, it's hard to ignore in The Boys season 2. Still, the voters chose to nominate the series for an Outstanding Drama statue against the far-more dramatic Handmaid's Taleand The Crown. Even if it can't bring home the gold, the fact that the Amazon series is finally being seen as a worthwhile addition to the list of nominees by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences is promising for both it and the comic book genre's futures. With any luck, Kripke and his crew will be able to clear the high bar set by season 2 and score even more nominations with the highly-anticipated season 3.
