DC's Entire Reality is Under Threat from the Anti-Mjolnir

0

Spoilers for The Flash #772 ahead!

There is a new and mysterious weapon in the DC Universe, and it is the anti-Mjolnir. In an interlude in The Flash's latest adventure, this fantastic new weapon from beyond the stars makes its debut, and it promises to bring destruction down on anyone “unworthy” enough to lift it.

Comic book fans know Mjolnir as Thor’s enchanted hammer, created by Eitri and the Dwarves of Nidavellir; it has been part of the character since his debut in 1962’s Journey Into Mystery #83. There are a number of enchantments on the hammer, including the most famous one which makes it so that only those worthy enough can lift it. In addition to Thor, Captain America, Jane Foster and Beta Ray Bill have proven worthy enough to lift the hammer. It is one of the most powerful weapons in the Marvel Universe and has served Thor well over the years. Now, in The Flash #772, the “anti-Mjolnir” has made its debut, ready to make life miserable for the heroes of the DC Universe. The issue is written by Jeremy Adams, with art by Will Conrad, colors by Alex Sinclair, and letters by Steve Wands.

The sword’s path across the DC Universe starts small; it only appears for one page in this issue. In deep space, a blinding flash of red light appears, and the sword bursts through. There is nothing particularly special about the sword, but narration reveals that it has been traveling through the multiverse and that it is nearing the end of its journey. As readers get a good look at the sword, it is revealed that the fate of the universe will ride on the shoulders of whoever is “unworthy” enough to lift it. The interlude ends there, leaving readers wondering about this fascinating new weapon.

With the arrival of Infinite Frontier, DC is showcasing their multiverse like never before; they have even introduced the much larger Omniverse. The interlude raised many questions, such as: where did the blade originate? Did it come from the Omniverse? Where exactly is the blade’s destination? Is it Earth? And what is meant by being “unworthy?” Does this mean only villains can hold the blade? If so, that is a horrifying prospect—a blade with the power to destroy worlds in the hands of a villain like Luthor, or even the Joker, should give pause to any hero. Darkseid has also been making moves across the multiverse—does this sword factor into his plans as well? And what is the Flash's role in this?

The anti-Mjolnir has made its debut in Flash's latest adventure. While there is still much to be revealed about this mysterious sword, it most certainly will impact the DC Universe in a huge way.
