Stranger Things Producer Responds To Whether Season 5 Will Be The Last
Stranger Things producer Shawn Levy gives a coy answer to the question of whether the hit Netflix series will end with season 5. When Stranger Things first began in 2016, few could have predicted just how popular it would be. Almost overnight, viewers were drawn to the 80s-set series, which centers on a group of young friends who become embroiled in a paranormal mystery in their small Indiana town. Stranger Things has since returned for two additional seasons, with a fourth on the way.
Stranger Things season 4 has been delayed considerably by the coronavirus pandemic, so fans are still eagerly awaiting the resolution of the cliffhanger that saw Jim Hopper (David Harbour) being held in a Russian prison. However, many are already looking ahead to the future when it comes to Stranger Things. For years, everyone has speculated about when the series will come to an end, particularly since creators Matt and Ross Duffer have stated they have a conclusion in already in mind. There was initially some speculation that season 3 would be Stranger Things' end, but as that has come and gone, all eyes are on season 5.
Levy recently spoke to Collider while promoting his new film Free Guy and answered the question of whether Stranger Things will conclude after season 5. Or, he gave an answer to it that doesn't confirm when the series will end, but does reiterate the fact that there is an end in sight. At the same time, he said it will be revealed relatively soon. Levy said:
“I have the end in sight. The brothers have the end in sight. There is a plan and that too will be shared not quite as soon as a sense of when Season 4 is coming out, but soon enough. I can say this. No, one's making it up as we go along and there is an endgame, if you will.”
Right off the bat, it's a relief to once again confirm that the Duffers know how Stranger Things will end. Too often, genre shows have an impressive run that falls apart due to lack of planning for the future. Lost is a notorious example, and some would say Game of Thrones is as well. Hopefully, Stranger Things won't fall into that trap because the creators have written the show with an eye on how it will all end.
As for the question of whether Stranger Things will conclude with season 5, that's less certain. Harbour already hinted that season 5 is a guarantee, so there will be at least one more batch of episodes beyond season 4. In television, 5 is a respectable number of seasons, and it can prevent the show from running a bit too long and losing its luster. As Levy said, the news about Stranger Things' end likely won't arrive until after season 4, but that's okay. For now, fans can get excited about what's ahead and not worry too much about when it'll all be finished.
