UK records another 25,161 Covid cases as infections continue to rise
Coronavirus cases in the UK are now rising by more than 5% week-on-week, according to the latest data, which saw another 25,161 infections recorded on Monday.
Some 37 deaths were also reported, meaning fatalities are up by nearly 15% on the previous seven days.
The latest figures bring the UK’s respective totals since the pandemic began to 130,357 deaths and 6,094,243 confirmed Covid-19 infections.
Separate figures published by the Office for National Statistics show there have been 155,000 deaths registered in the UK where the virus was mentioned on the death certificate.
Cases are down for a third day in a row, but that is likely to be due to a lag in reporting over the weekend – with Monday’s figure up nearly 15% compared with a week ago.
However, the data suggests a mixed picture, with hospitalisations down by 15% compared with the previous seven days.
Meanwhile, the vaccination rollout has slowed down dramatically – with only 22,000 people getting a first dose in the latest 24 hour period.
