Game subscription service Xbox Game Pass has landed another big day-one release, as upcoming strategy game Humankind is coming to Xbox Game Pass PC and Game Pass Ultimate at launch. Humankind is a strategy game in the same vein as the Civilization series, wherein players build an empire and lead it from ancient history into the modern era in order to become the dominant nation.
Microsoft's commitment to Xbox Game Pass ensures that all Xbox Game Studios titles will launch on the service, which will include titles like Halo Infinite and Starfield in the future. The service also adds many games from third-party developers when they launch on Xbox systems and PC, including Dragon Quest Builders 2, Dungeons & Dragons: Dark Alliance, and Octopath Traveler.
The August Xbox Game Pass lineup is already full of anticipated titles, with games like Hades and Psychonauts 2 coming to the service. Now, the PC version of Xbox Game Pass is getting a surprise day-one release, as Xbox has announced Humankind is coming to Xbox Game Pass PC at launch. Humankind is set to release on Google Stadia, macOS, and PC on August 17, but only Xbox Game Pass PC and Game Pass Ultimate subscribers can download and play the game that day at no extra cost.
This latest Game Pass title could prove to be a valuable one for PC players. Humankind is a historical 4X strategy game that asks players to lead a civilization through six different eras. Rather than choosing a single nation and sticking with them throughout the run of a game, Humankind players can combine a number of different societies under one nation and improve different aspects of their respective cultures, providing an ambitious number of strategic options. Unlike Civilization and some other 4X game's victory conditions, one can only succeed in a Humankind playthrough by accruing the highest Fame score at the end of the game. Fame is earned by completing great tasks, building wonders, and leaving a lasting mark on the world, one ensuring future generations remember the impact of their actions.
It's lucrative day-one launches like Humankind that make Xbox Game Pass a worthwhile investment in many players' eyes, especially in comparison to PlayStation Now's less flexible monthly offerings. Microsoft has revealed even more Game Pass announcements will be made during its Xbox Gamescom 2021 showcase, so it will be intriguing to see what else is coming to the service in the near future.
