In the last few moments of the BBC hospital drama, Cameron (Nic Jackman) was told by Henrik (Guy Henry) that there was someone who wanted to see him.

He looked up to see his mum – Bernie – getting out of a car across the road and look over to him.

A shocked Cameron had presumed his mother was dead after a fatal explosion in 2019.

His mother’s supposed death led to downward spiral for Cameron who became a multiple murderer and had faked his death.

Cameron was also up to no good as he had been spotted earlier in the episode building a bomb in the hospital’s basement.

“What the… am I awake? Is this for real!! Bernie! Not dead! It might have been so different for Cameron if he had had his mummy @jemma_redgrave so lovely to see you again,” wrote one fan on Twitter.

Another added: “I cannot even tell you….Bernie B***dy Wolfe is back. Dreams do come true.”

And a third wrote: “Bernie Wolfe alive. Didn’t have that on my 2021 bingo card.”

Many fans also pointed out the increasing intensity of Holby City’s storylines will make them miss the beloved soap even more when it comes off air in six months.

“The ending of that episode should be the reason why Holby City shouldn’t end,” one fan wrote.

In June, Beeb bosses confirmed the much-loved medical drama would be cancelled after 23 years on screen.

petition begging the BBC not to cancel Holby City has already racked up almost 42,000 signatures.

Final episodes of the soap will air in March 2022.

The much-loved show, created as a spin-off from BBC’s Casualty by Tony McHale and Mal Young, premiered in 1999.

It became a huge hit with fans as it followed the drama of the staff who work in Holby City Hospital.

In a press release published at the time of the announcement, the BBC stated: “We are incredibly proud of Holby City but it’s with great sadness that we are announcing that after 23 years, the show will end on screen in March of next year.

“We sometimes have to make difficult decisions to make room for new opportunities and as part of the BBC’s commitment to make more programmes across the UK, we have taken the difficult decision to bring the show to a close in order to reshape the BBC’s drama slate to better reflect, represent and serve all parts of the country.

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank the amazing team at BBC Studios and all the cast and crew who have been involved in the show since 1999.

“Holby has been a stalwart with audiences, delighting millions of viewers each week and winning hundreds of awards with a compelling mix of cutting edge medical stories and explosive personal stories.

“We look forward to working with the team over the coming months to ensure that when it ends, Holby goes out on a high.”

Holby City airs on Tuesdays on BBC One.
