What We Do in the Shadows EP Teases Laszlo & Colin's New Friendship
What We Do in the Shadows EP Paul Simms has teased a new bromance between Laszlo and Colin Robinson for season 3. The biting, Emmy-nominated vampire mockumentary series, based on Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement's 2014 film of the same name, What We Do in the Shadows, has been a massive success for FX since its premiere in 2019. The show follows four vampiric roommates - Nandor (Kayvan Novak), Laszlo (Matt Berry), Nadja (Natasia Demetriou), and Colin Robinson (Mark Proksch) - and their forsaken familiar Guillermo (Harvey Guillén) as they set forth on various nightly misadventures on Staten Island. The show's second season delivered a lot of hilarity last year. Now season 3 is scheduled to return for more laughs on September 2, 2021.
With the premiere so close, the promotional campaign for What We Do in the Shadows' third season is in full swing. The show has been regularly rolling out teasers and other tidbits, hinting at the storylines and surprises that await viewers in the upcoming iteration. Recently, many clips from season 3 showcased the vampires trying to sell stuff on eBay to declutter themselves. A few other videos found them penning hysterical diary entries. Last month, an official trailer was unveiled, teasing new drama at the Vampiric Council (which the vampires will take over) after Guillermo killed almost all of its original members to save his masters in the explosive season 2 finale. Now EP Paul Simms has revealed some additional about the show.
In a conversation with SYFY WIRE, published on Tuesday, Simms teased an unexpected, brand new chemistry between Berry's Laszlo and Proksch's Colin Robinson for What We Do in the Shadows season 3. When asked how he keeps the show from losing steam, Simms said that he tries to expand the Shadows universe in a way that it's visually appealing and amusing. So as he goes about doing that, the different camaraderies between the characters also grow, sometimes in ways that he might not have anticipated. The same goes for Colin Robinson and Laszlo's relationship, They previously despised each other, but in season 3, they will foster a surprising bond that will evolve throughout the show.
"It's a combination of two things. It's seeing more of, and expanding, the supernatural world in ways that are visual and funny. And whenever I read interviews about getting “more into the characters,” it makes it sound so boring. [Laughs.] But there are relationships, obviously, in the show that have developed that were never planned out originally. You'll start to see a glimpse of it in Season 3 of Laszlo and Colin Robinson — two people who basically get on each other's nerves—developing this unusual friendship that plays out through the season. And I think the main thing we try to do is always keep having surprises. There are some good ones in the [first four], and there's some great surprises that come up through the rest of the season."
The playful bromance that Simms mentions has already been teased in the What We Do in the Shadows' season 3 official trailer. There is a moment in the footage where Laszlo and Colin Robinson try to fuel up a vintage car before going for a ride. But during the attempt-gone-horribly-wrong, Colin Robinson accidentally sets himself on fire. He manages to remain unhurt, though, in part, thanks to his mystical powers as an energy vampire, which will also be further explored in the forthcoming show. The particular sequence will run in episode 303, "Gail," probably when the unusual fellowship between Laszlo and Colin kindles.
Off-kilter matchups have been a significant selling point for What We Do in the Shadows. Sure, the vampires (and Guillermo) all live under one roof, but not always do they gel well; many times, they really give each other the hump. These ridiculous contentions between the characters provide the show with its true comic essence, and they are also why people love the show so much. However, sometimes, unconventional bonds also develop. Though they immediately do not cater to the show's sense of deadpan humor, they help fans understand the characters better and grow fonder towards them. Laszlo and Colin Robinson are two of the show's major comedic powerhouses, so it will be interesting to see what hijinks ensue as they join hands.
