James Gunn Interested In Directing The Suicide Squad 3

0

The Suicide Squad writer/director James Gunn is confirming his interest to return to the DC Extended Universe for The Suicide Squad 3. Gunn's debut in the Warner Bros. comic book franchise finds Amanda Waller building a new Task Force X to head to the island nation of Corto Maltese in search of evidence regarding the mysterious Project Starfish, better known as Starro the Conqueror, and destroy it. The film acted as a follow-up to David Ayer's 2016 film, with returning stars including Harley Quinn's Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman's Rick Flag, Viola Davis' Amanda Waller and Captain Boomerang's Jai Courtney wile also featuring a large roster of franchise newcomers, including Idris Elba as Bloodsport, John Cena as Peacemaker, Daniela Melchior as Ratcatcher 2 and David Dastmalchian as Polka-Dot Man.

Hitting theaters and HBO Max on August 5, The Suicide Squad has been a hit for WB and DC, scoring rave reviews from critics and audiences alike and being hailed as a significant improvement over Ayer's film. Though somewhat underperforming at the box office amidst the pandemic, bringing in $154.6 million against its $185 million budget, the film became a streaming hit for HBO Max, becoming the third-most-streamed film on the platform and the most-streamed DC film, beating out Zack Snyder's Justice League and Wonder Woman 1984. Gunn is currently gearing up for the release of the first trailer for spin-off series Peacemaker at this year's DC FanDome, but it appears he's not ready to leave the DCEU anytime soon.

On the heels of hosting a watch party for the film, one fan took to Twitter to ask Gunn about his interest in helming a sequel to The Suicide Squad. Though noting he views Peacemaker as an actual sequel to the film, Gunn confirmed he is open to coming back for The Suicide Squad 3. Check out Gunn's post below:

Gunn's split from Marvel Studios during development on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 became one of the most infamous occurrences in Hollywood, especially as the studio reversed their decision and brought him back, though Gunn hasn't been shy to share the threequel will likely be his last project at the studio. Additionally, Gunn has shared nothing but love for his time working with DC and the creative freedom he was allotted in making The Suicide Squad. Given both he and studios executives have confirmed he will be back in the universe outside of Peacemaker and Gunn saying the film is possible, it should come as exciting news Gunn is open to helming the threequel.

With comic book productions being so secretive, it's understandable that neither Gunn nor DC can say what his next project will be in the DCEU, but with how attached to the characters of The Suicide Squad he's become since first writing the film,  it would make sense for Gunn to come back for The Suicide Squad 3. In addition to his irreverent sense of humor, the film proved his ability to give some of the odder and underexplored characters from the DC Comics world their proper time in the light, even if they were to die shortly thereafter. Only time will tell whether he partners with the studio for a threequel or for an entirely different project.
