9 Times FXX's Dave Made Us Cry | ScreenRant

FX has become a place for unique and creative shows to thrive like What We Do In The Shadows or Atlanta and the same holds true for their sister network, FXX. Arguably their best show is Dave, created by Lil Dicky, which has proven to be versatile as both a comedy and a drama.

Audiences will laugh for nearly an entire episode at times, only to be brought to tears emotionally by the end. The series dives deep into topics like mental health, pressures of fame, and more. It has certainly made viewers cry tears of sadness, heartbreak, and also of happiness.

9 Dave & Ally Sing Autotune Together

Sometimes, the tear-jerking moments on Dave were simply just sweet. That was the case with this opening scene from "Ally's Toast," which is widely viewed as one of the best episodes of the series. It's a simple enough set up as Dave (Dave Burd) and Ally (Taylor Misiak) prepared to go to a wedding.

Dave was busy messing around with an autotune setting, even though Ally was rushing him to get ready. He called her over and together, they turned their conversation into an adorable bit of autotune gold that Dave wanted to use as an interlude on his album. It was a small moment but it showcased how much fun these two were as a couple and how much they loved each other.

8 Mike All Alone On His Birthday

This is a show that isn't afraid to get weird and that was clear in season 2's "The Observer." Most of the runtime was spent with Dave and Benny Blanco, hanging out and doing odd things together. Meanwhile, the b-plot of the episode seemed harmless. It was simply Mike (Andrew Santino) at home, getting annoyed by his neighbors.

However, Mike took things too far by setting up hidden cameras and interrogating those living around him. It was then revealed that Mike was driven to this by his feelings of isolation. Dave was off "working" and everyone else had stuff going on but Mike was all alone. To make things worse, it was Mike's birthday and all he really got was a barely-there phone call from Dave.

7 Ally Sees "It" For The First Time

On the surface, this might seem like an odd moment to tear up for. The entire premise involves Dave's girlfriend Ally seeing his genitals for the first time but it's the backstory behind it that makes it hit emotionally. Dave is incredibly insecure about that area of his body due to surgeries and conditions that he has.

Though he was with Ally for a long time, he strategically hid this but it all came out in "Hypospadias." Ally asked to see it for the first time, which was a big moment for Dave. In a true sign of love, Ally simply accepted what it looked like, putting Dave's mind at ease and further cementing why he loved her in the first place.

6 Emma Gets Left Out Of Dave's Performance

The character of Emma (Christine Ko) is one who was often underutilized throughout most of season 1. She nearly stole every scene she was in but just wasn't around enough. Season 2 gave her more shine, with the brightest light coming in "Ad Man," where her past with Dave was expanded upon.

The two worked at an ad agency together and came up with a great presentation that marked Dave's first rap performance in front of an audience. Despite all of Emma's hard work, the room was mostly just impressed with Dave and he barely even gave her credit. Watching her also step up to help Dave in the present only to again not get recognized for her efforts was a sad look into what she consistently deals with.

5 Dave Finds Out His Dad Has Depression

Dave's parents are among the better supporting cast members of the show, always bringing the fun when they share the screen. That changed a bit in season 2 as they were part of an emotional episode titled, "The Burds." Dave was forced to live with his parents again for a short time and got an insight into their lives.

He was upset to see his mom Carol (Gina Hecht) get angry at his dad Don (David Paymer) at almost every turn. It led to a huge argument where Don revealed that he has had depression for years. Carol knew but Dave broke down because he didn't and he felt like it made him a bad son not to realize that.

4 Ally Hears "Ally's Song"

A lot of season 2 dealt with Dave's inability to get work done on his album. He had a serious case of writer's block except for one track that seemed to stand out. Mike found it on his laptop and it was titled "Ally's Song." It was about his breakup with Ally and used some of the sounds they put together with autotune.

Later in the episode, Dave visited Ally and allowed her to hear the song. The lyrics themselves were sad enough, with Dave admitting that he messed everything up and that he missed her. It got sadder as Ally's reaction changed from happiness at hearing a song to heartbreak at the words. Yet in the end, Dave still was selfish about possibly releasing the song against her wishes.

3 GaTa Reveals He Has Bipolar Disorder

The fact that GaTa wasn't an actor before joining this series is remarkable considering how he has often delivered some of the best scenes. "Hype Man" put the spotlight on him in season 1 as it detailed his past. Several times throughout the episode, GaTa was shown to get too over the top, excited, or angry for seemingly small reasons.

In the present, he felt himself ramping up again and got a high dosage of his medication, which made him feel low again. When confronted about it by Dave, Elz, and Mike, GaTa tearfully revealed that he has bipolar disorder. He explained what it does to him but then shared that he feels at home with those guys because they're all weird and different, just like him.

2 GaTa Performs With Dave

The season 2 finale, "Dave," seemed like it was heading down a very emotionally turbulent path. Dave was at odds with GaTa, who seemed to be ramping up again and making impulsive decisions. The two argued and GaTa detailed his disappointment that Dave has never even opted to work with him on a song, despite GaTa's undying loyalty.

As Lil Dicky prepared for a huge performance at the VMAs, the show intercut those scenes with shots of a teary-eyed GaTa and fans feared something bad would happen. Then, it was revealed that GaTa was stepping onto the VMA stage with Dave, performing alongside his best friend. GaTa got his moment and viewers cried tears of joy at this heartwarming moment.

1 Ally Gives Her Wedding Toast

The relationship between Ally and Dave was certainly a high point of season 1, being both charming and realistic in its depiction. So, seeing things go wrong for them was always going to upset the viewers. "Ally's Toast" gave signs of trouble all throughout its runtime. After an argument about Dave putting his work before Ally, she gave a toast the next day at the wedding.

In it, she explained that her sister's relationship with her husband was great because they're willing to work just as hard at their relationship as they are at their careers, which Dave doesn't do. As Ally sat back down, the show cut to Dave driving home, as the autotune song played with the seemingly harmless lyrics being shockingly relevant to this heartbreak.
