Ted Lasso’s Brett Goldstein Responds To Roy Kent CGI Theory
Brett Goldstein responds to an internet theory that his character on Ted Lasso, Roy Kent, is actually CGI. After premiering on Apple TV+ in August of last year, Ted Lasso has wholly caught on as the streaming service's breakout comedy series. Jason Sudeikis stars as the titular American football coach equipped with perpetual positivity who is unexpectedly recruited to manage a Premier League football club in England, AFC Richmond. Though he initially clashes with a lot of the players, he eventually wins them over with his optimism, charm, and warmth.
One of those players is the foul-mouthed and short-tempered veteran Roy Kent, portrayed by Brett Goldstein who is also a writer on the show. Roy eventually lightens up a bit under Ted's tutelage and through his romantic relationship with the team's marketing manager, Keeley (Juno Temple). In the season 1 finale, Roy suffers a career-ending knee injury during a game against Manchester City and is forced to retire. Season 2 sees Roy undertake a brief stint as a pundit before quitting to rejoin AFC Richmond as an assistant coach. His presence immediately improves the team, which is quickly dubbed the "Roy Kent Effect."
Amidst all this Roy Kent hype, there has been a growing conspiracy theory online that the character is not portrayed by Brett Goldstein at all but is actually created using CGI. The theory began on the Ted Lasso subreddit nearly a year ago as fans began pointing out Roy's supposed strange and unnatural appearance and movements. The fan theory has even grown enough in popularity that Goldstein himself saw fit to respond. In a video posted to Instagram, the actor, writer, and comedian cheekily shot down the theory with multiple expletives, just as one would expect Roy Kent to do. "A f-cking load of mad sh-t happening on the internet today, as usual" he starts. "I just wanna clear up something once and for all: I am a completely real, normal, human man, who just happens to live in a VFX house and does normal, human, basic things like rendering and buffering and transferring data. I don't know what everyone's f-cking problem is." Watch the video below:

Goldstein's irreverent response is the perfect retort to all the Redditors who seemingly believe that Roy Kent is a CGI character. While there's always a chance some of them are joking, there appears to be a faction who actually subscribe to this outlandish theory. Some have even speculated that when Goldstein's name is announced next month at the Emmy Awards, Apple will finally reveal that they successfully duped everyone with their incredible new CGI technology.
The actor's response probably won't do much to shoot down these theories. In fact, it will probably do the opposite and fuel them even more as some may take his obvious joking as an open admission. The internet and social media have allowed these types of conspiracy theories to flourish in a way that wasn't possible before, and this Ted Lasso ordeal is just the latest example of that.
