A little September Mazeika magic for the Mets. The so-called king of driving in runners without recording a hit did it again Sunday, scoring Javier Baez on a sacrifice fly to put the Mets up for good in the eighth inning.

The Mets continued their series against the Nationals continuing to inch their way back to the top of the NL East, winning 13-6 and grabbing their 69th win in the process.

Josiah Gray struggled for the Nationals with the Mets scoring six runs off him in the first three innings.

New York began Sunday with five baserunners before recording an out. Jonathan Villar doubled, Francisco Lindor walked, Pete Alonso singled, Michael Conforto singled, Baez singled, and Jeff McNeil recorded a sacrifice fly for the Mets first out. In all, they brought four runners across the plate in the opening inning.

But Taijuan Walker couldn’t keep the Mets up for long. He let up a leadoff home run to Lane Thomas and a two-run shot to Josh Bell in the bottom of the first to bring Washington within one.

The ball was flying out of the park. Villar and Baez each hit home runs in the second and third inning, respectively. The Mets led 6-3 until the fifth inning.

Walker wouldn’t finish five innings, charged with six runs in the process. Walker got a groundout from Luis Garcia to begin the inning but five straight baserunners from Washington would result in his removal. The Nationals loaded the bases for Juan Soto and he delivered with a single to center scoring two runs. They added a third run on a wild pitch in the ensuing at-bat to Bell.

Jeurys Familia played fireman, entering with two runners on. He struck out Carter Kieboom and Riley Adams to suffocate the red-hot Nats.

The Mets loaded the bases for Patrick Mazeika in the eighth. His sacrifice fly would put New York up for good.

They added insurance in the ninth. Lindor smacked a ninth-inning home run for the second day in a row. He’s now four for his last eight with two home runs. Alonso grabbed his second double of the afternoon and was driven in by Conforto a batter later. Baez completed a 4-4 day with a single but Conforto was held at third. McNeil walked to load the bases.

Austin Voth struggled. Brandon Nimmo‘s replacement Kevin Pillar stepped up. He hit it out of the park. Six runs for the Mets in the ninth before a batter was retired. What was a nailbiter became an early exit for fans.

The Mets and Nats will play one more tomorrow. Trevor Williams and Patrick Corbin are scheduled to start.
