Veteran Harry shows age is no barrier as he wins Knights of Malta Cup
Eighty-five year old Harry O’Hanrahan left a field of 227 trailing in his wake after producing what he described as his best ever competitive round to win the Knights of Malta Cup.
Playing off 29, and a month short of his 86th birthday, O’Hanrahan shot a remarkable 45pts to beat Ray Pepper (22) and Mark Cumiskey (10) by two points with Pepper edging out Cumiskey for second place overall on countback after shooting 26pts down the back nine.
O’Hanrahan shot 25pts on the opening nine where three successive four point returns on six, seven and eight were the highlight. He had started steadily with two point returns from four of the first five holes and a three point bogey at the third where he had a two shots. He then birdied the index 17 par five fifth for four points and a pars at the seventh and eighth, where had two shots, also four points.
He came home in 20pts which included four three point returns at the 11th, 15th, 16th and 18th, where he took full advantage of having two strokes on those holes, and although he had a blank at the par three 17th after a triple bogey six, his overall total of 45pts was more than enough to claim the overall victory.
