Doctor Strange Writer Shares Reaction To What If Episode 4
Doctor Strange writer C. Robert Cargill shares his reaction to episode 4 of Marvel's What If...?, the latest Disney+ Marvel Cinematic Universe series. The 2016 MCU film starred Benedict Cumberbatch as the titular arrogant neurosurgeon who gets in a car crash and loses the ability to use his hands in the same capacity. Initially turning to Kamar-Taj and learning the mystic arts from The Ancient One, Mordo and Wong in order to heal his hands, Strange is ultimately pulled into a battle to save the universe from the Dark Dimension ruler Dormammu.
Episode 4 of What If...? explores a different angle to the events of the film as Strange is with his girlfriend Dr. Christine Palmer in the car accident, which kills her rather than take away his hands. Once again, Strange turns to the mystic arts in an effort to fix this mistake, which would ultimately put him on the path to becoming the evil Doctor Strange Supreme. The episode featured the returns of Cumberbatch as Strange as well as Rachel McAdams, Benedict Wong as Wong, Tilda Swinton as The Ancient One and Leslie Bibb as Christine Everhart.
On the heels of its premiere on Disney+, Cargill took to Twitter to share his thoughts on the latest episode of What If...?. The episode, reinterpreting the events of Cargill's Doctor Strange, received high praise from the writer for its script and themes and calling it a highlight of his career to see an episode based on his film. The Doctor Strange-centered episode of What If...? may have divided some on McAdams' Christine's involvement in the story, with many criticizing it as an example of fridging, it has ultimately received praise for the risks it took in regards to its universe-threatening character development. Though Cargill and director/co-writer Scott Derrickson may have departed the MCU during development on Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the high praise from the former for the animated episode is certainly nice to see for fans of the original film. It also comes as rewarding for said fans that Cargill celebrates the episode's authenticity to the comics as much as to the MCU itself.
Episode 4 of What If...? marked a major turning point for the series and the MCU, namely in hinting at the futures to come for The Watcher and The Ancient One, as well as the first inklings of how the series could begin to affect upcoming film and shows. Having reached the halfway point of its season 1 run, the animated series is certainly proving to be an exciting addition to the MCU and begs not only the question of what if but also what's next for alternate realities. Only time will tell when episode 5 arrives on Disney+ this Wednesday.
