Fan Casting The In-Development Clue Remake | ScreenRant

A remake of the cult classic murder mystery movie Clue has been in development for years. It’s unknown if it’ll ever see the light of day, as everyone from Ryan Reynolds to Jason Bateman has been in talks to lead the project.

However, with the success of Knives Out and the Adam Sandler-led Murder Mystery, there’s a new reignited excitement in the niche genre and now would be the perfect time for a remake. And just as was the case with Knives Out and its sequel, the best part of the movie is sometimes the mix and matching of various movie stars, old and new.

8 Mrs. Peacock - Meryl Streep

With three Academy Award wins and an unbelievable 18 other nominations, Meryl Streep is one of the greatest dramatic actors in history. Not only that, but unlike so many of her peers, Streep isn’t afraid to delve into sillier roles. Meryl Streep has loads of funny movies, such as the LGBTQ+ hit Death Becomes Her and the pitch-black kid’s comedy, A Series of Unfortunate Events.

Mrs. Peacock is the older character who plays dumb and acts as if she’s out of the loop, but in reality, she’s the wife of a US senator who is accused of taking bribes. Not only could Streep brilliantly play on Mrs. Peacock’s senile facade, but she could expertly portray the character’s darker side when her secret is revealed too.

7 Colonel Mustard - Giancarlo Esposito

Giancarlo Esposito has always looked great in yellow, as that was his work attire for years in his breakout role as evil drug Lord Gustavo Fring in Breaking Bad. However, despite Clue’s color coordination of its characters, it’s more than Fring’s mustard-colored uniform that would make Esposito a great fit for the character.

Esposito has settled into playing predictably vindictive villains ever since Breaking Bad ended, such as in The Mandalorian and The Boys, and Colonel Mustard is a villain too, but a totally different kind. The character is a war profiteer, which couldn’t be any more in Esposito’s wheelhouse, but there’s also a comedic edge to Mustard along with the fact that he’s fairly incapable at his job. It’d give the actor the ability to play a character slightly outside of his comfort zone.

6 Yvette - Jennifer Lawrence

Clue is one of the best murder mystery movies, but given that it was released close to 40 years ago at this point, there are a few things that don’t quite hold up. One of those things is Yvette, the maid who has almost no personality traits and is simply eye candy that the other characters drool over. However, the in-development remake could rewrite her and give her more distinct characteristics while still maintaining her secret of being a former call girl.

Jeniffer Lawrence has the sass, she loves to have fun with her roles, and with the right script, she could turn Yvette into a more rounded and three-dimensional character. Lawrence has shown how comedic she can be off-screen, but she’s never had a fully comedic role, and Yvette could be the perfect part for exactly that.

5 Mr. Green - Edward Norton

Edward Norton is no stranger to ensemble casts. In fact, though his starring movies such as Fight Club and American History X are now considered classics, multi-stranded movies are where the actor thrives. Norton will even be starring in Knives Out 2, another murder mystery movie set in a confined area, but that doesn’t mean he can’t be in two.

Mr. Green is a closeted gay man and an undercover FBI agent, and his quirky roles in several Wes Anderson movies show just how great he would be as Mr. Green. Not only that, but the character is the most involved in slapstick comedy, which Norton is no stranger to. The actor is incredibly agile, and his half-naked fight with Michael Keaton in Birdman is enough of an audition in itself

4 Professor Plum - Jeffrey Wright

Like almost all of the characters in Clue, Plum is a professional in his field of work, as he’s a psychiatrist for the World Health Organization, but was disgraced for gross misconduct. The role in the original was one of just a couple of stars the film had, as the character was played by the idiosyncratic Christopher Lloyd, and he portrayed the character in a typically peculiar way.

Jeffrey Wright has been getting more and more roles in recent years, and that’s in part due to being typecast as the rational and sage scientist or detective type role, whether it’s in Westworld or the upcoming The Batman. Wright will even be leading a Gotham PD spin-off. Those skills as that type of learned character could be translated over to Professor Plum. And though the actor might not be described as idiosyncratic, his role in the comedy Game Night is the one part that proves how Wright is actually hilarious and has great comedic timing, and he’s an underrated comedy actor.

3 Miss Scarlett - Anne Hathaway

Just like with Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway is one of the greatest actors of this generation, but she still excitedly takes roles that are intentionally silly. A recent example of that is in the new remake of The Witches.

Miss Scarlett is a femme fatale type character, and it’s exactly the type of fun, theatrical character with detailed period outfits that Hathaway loves. She is the sassiest character in the movie, and that’s something most of Hathaway’s comedic characters have in spades. It’d also be great to see Hathaway and Streep reunite and act alongside each other for the first time since The Devil Wears Prada in 2006.

2 Mrs. White - Awkwafina

Awkwafina seemingly got famous overnight, as she is now in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, part of the all-female Ocean’s Eleven reboot, and will be in the upcoming live-action remake of The Little Mermaid.

Though she has had some dramatic and emotive roles, her success is mostly thanks to her laugh-out-loud comedy. Taking on the role of Mrs. White, a widow who presumably killed two of her husbands, would be a playground for Awkwafina, as she could be her unfiltered self and take the comedy as far as she can.

1 Wadsworth - Benedict Cumberbatch

Even though Tim Curry is unforgettable as the mansion's butler, there’s no other A-list actor today that could portray Wadsworth better than Benedict Cumberbatch. Many actors have an indescribable X-factor that makes them so bankable, but Cumberbatch seems like he'd be perfect as the butler in this film..

It’s easy to imagine Cumberbatch flailing around the halls of the mansion, excitedly trying to solve the murder just like Tim Curry did in 1985. But besides the obvious, the actor has never been in an outright comedy before (besides the animated The Grinch,) even though he’d easily be able to carry it by himself.
