James Gunn's Hyped For KOTOR Remake, Says Original Is His Favorite Game
James Gunn, the director of Guardians of the Galaxy, claims he is hyped for the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake and said that the original was his favorite game of all time. KOTOR is finally being remade by Aspyr. The long-rumored remake was confirmed at the fall 2021 PlayStation Showcase, which included the reveal that the game will launch on the PlayStation 5. The RPG, which takes place 4000 years before the founding of the Galactic Empire, will reportedly be a PlayStation 5 console exclusive at launch, though it is expected to release on other consoles after an unspecified period of time. The game’s teaser trailer was only a brief cinematic of the game’s premier Sith lord, but this seemed to be enough to get James Gunn hyped for its release.
The Guardians of the Galaxy director previously announced on Twitter that his favorite piece of Star Wars media is BioWare’s Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. The DC Comics and Marvel director claimed that he considers it one of the best video games ever made. He explained that it was “the greatest video game of all-time” but did add that “just because it’s a perfect video game doesn’t mean it needs to be a movie.” The director left out the potential for a remake and it seems the announcement didn’t set off any red flags.
As James Gunn has confessed on Twitter, the director is hyped for the Knights of the Old Republic remake. The Suicide Squad director claimed that “it’s my favorite game ever.” His statement went even bolder, claiming that he doesn’t “know if I will ever be as happy again as I was while playing KOTOR the first time through.” He also added: “Also maybe the second.” The revealing tweet was a reply to his first post, in which he linked the announcement for the PS5 exclusive remake with the caption “oooh.”
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is expected to bring the nostalgic feel of the original BioWare game, while simultaneously bringing a breath of fresh air into the franchise. While not a lot is known about Aspyr’s remake, the developers have had practice remaking other Star Wars properties, including Republic Commando. While the task is a heavy burden, Aspyr seems to be one of the developers best equipped for the task.
However, there is plenty of skepticism from fans who are worried the remake won’t do the original game justice. The remake is not pegged to be a complete remaster but will instead include variations on the original’s formula. It was once speculated that the KOTOR remake will have more action, less RPG compared to BioWare’s original version. Amidst the excitement from fans and prolific directors alike, time will tell how well Aspyr remakes Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.
