The Transformers' Version of The Flash Is Hunting The Good Starscream

0

Warning!  Spoilers ahead for Transformers: Shattered Glass!

An Autobot named Blurr, who is essentially Transformers' equivalent of the Flash in both word and deed, is hunting down Decepticons as his world's most talented bounty hunter--and his first target is Starscream. Transformers: Shattered Glass takes place in an alternate universe where the Autobots are evil, though this is not made immediately apparent. There are clues, however, like when an image of Optimus Prime is portrayed in a sinister manner with ominous shadows accenting his menacing eyes.

However, Blurr's Flash-like personality, complete with an overt sense of cockiness due to his ability to travel at extreme velocities and a hyperactive mentality, gives him an innocent-like appeal in the new comic series Transformers: Shattered Glass #1 by writer Danny Lore, artist Guido Guidi and colorist John-Paul Bove. It's also humorous when he gets excited and starts speaking at what feels like 100 syllables per second because everything he says comes out as one massively long word. But Blurr also utilizes this quick speech pattern to deliver harsh verbal insults like a Decepticon, including the time he starts speaking slowly because he believes Starscream is dimwitted.

While Blurr doesn't appear to be pure evil, his methods are dubious and highly suspect. When he sees two other Autobots fighting Starscream, Blurr doesn't want to risk sharing the bounty, so he attacks them and pretends to have defected to the Decepticons so Starscream will travel with him willingly and be lured into a false sense of complacency. But like the Starscream from the normal Transformers universe, the Decepticon is quite perceptive and only plays along with Blurr until they reach a remote setting, where he finally strikes.

This morally questionable act is what makes this alternate reality setting palatable. Starscream is still the same old Starscream who will use his superior wit to defeat his enemies in usually inhumane ways just like a typical Decepticon. Starscream is undoubtedly able to maintain his personality in this upside-down world because he has always been depicted as a loose cannon (plus it would be a travesty if he were not a conniving backstabber). Even though his goal has always been to overthrow Megatron to assume the Decepticon throne, IDW recently portrayed Starscream as a Transformer who's only loyal to the winning side. But how much of Starscream's personality is actually maintained in this alternate reality will be put to the test when he eventually finds Megatron.

Conversely, it doesn't truly matter how future issues of Transformers: Shattered Glass portray Megatron himself or Optimus Prime as it's possible to just switch their personalities. All that matters is that Starscream somehow attempts to double-cross the "good" Megatron like he would in the universe where he's evil. At least readers can take some solace in how Starscream brutally murders Blurr, which, ironically enough, would undoubtedly serve as an effective means to slow down the Flash.
