While his physical form may appear terrifying and grotesque, the Marvel Comics superhero Man-Thing has proven himself a worthy protector of not just Earth-616 but of all realities, and now an all-new figure turns the horror icon into a ‘Where’s Waldo?’ of cool details. Man-Thing is the Guardian of the Nexus of All Realities. Made from a botched super-soldier experiment mixed with elder magic, Man-Thing uses his position to strike fear into the hearts of those who mean harm, and that element of the character is put on full display with striking detail in an all-new figure.
Man-Thing was introduced in 1971’s Savage Tales #1 and was created by Stan Lee, Roy Thomas, Steve Gerber, Gerry Conway, and Gray Morrow. The hero’s origin begins with a scientist named Dr. Theodore Sallis who was working on a super-soldier serum in a laboratory in the swamp. Something goes horribly wrong and the lab explodes, subjecting Sallis to the incomplete serum along with the surrounding elements of the swamp. Sallis’ surroundings merged into him, including the mystical elements of the swamp, along with the incomplete serum turning him forever into the horror icon Man-Thing.
Made available through Mondo Shop and designed by James Groman comes an all-new Man-Thing figure with striking detail that makes someone who looks at it feel like they're playing a 3D ‘Where’s Waldo?’. The figure is a perfect depiction of Man-Thing with some added features sprinkled into his likeness. Since the origin of Man-Thing describes Dr. Sallis being merged with the swamp, Groman runs with that idea in an epically detailed fashion. Fans will notice the twisted spine Sallis’ new form with a tree growing from Man-Thing’s back, a skull beneath the tree, and a snake wrapped around Man-Thing’s leg. Throughout Man-Thing’s body, there are mushrooms and spores along with vines that engulf his entirety.
Mondo Shop announced this new figure along with another piece of Man-Thing art. A new screenprint, available in regular and variant editions, by Francesco Francavilla features the horror icon walking through a shadowy swamp, guarding the Nexus of All Realities. The poster is a more classic take on the character as he is often depicted in Marvel Comics as opposed to the figure which runs wild with the possibilities of what Man-Thing’s body can consist of.
Whenever one looks at the Man-Thing figure there is the potential to see a whole new creature hidden within, that’s the beauty of James Groman’s art. A creative take on an already intriguing character that wields more power than fans would initially expect has been brought to life with creative genius and striking design. The Man-Thing Designer Vinyl Figure by James Groman will be available Summer of 2022. The Man-Thing Screenprinted Poster by Francesco Francavilla is expected to be available in March of 2022.
