INGLEWOOD — The Rams face a lot of questions about the depth of their star-studded roster. At least for one afternoon, they had an answer.
Backup running back Sony Michel filled in for sore-legged Darrell Henderson and carried the ball for 129 yards and a touchdown, his best day since the 2018 playoffs with the Patriots.
Others contributing to the Rams’ 37-7 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars at SoFi Stadium included backup center Coleman Shelton, who came in after starter Brian Allen hurt a knee on the first drive; offensive lineman Joe Noteboom, who was used repeatedly in the tight-end position to beef up run blocking; wide receiver Ben Skowronek, who had a 35-yard catch on a second-quarter field-goal drive; and Brandon Powell, who was elevated from the practice squad to return kickoffs and ran 65 yards with the opening kick.
“Guys that were asked to play more than they probably had this season stepped up and played great,” quarterback Matthew Stafford said. “Sony, I thought, ran the ball really well. Going into the week, seeing the plan unfold, I thought ‘This is a Sony Michel type game. He’s just going to slug it out, wear on these dudes.’ “
The Rams had no update on the condition of Allen, who returned at the start of this season after missing a year and a half with a knee injury.
Shelton, a third-year Ram from Loyola High in Los Angeles and the University of Washington, said he was ready for his most extensive action since the 2019 game in which Allen was injured.
“It’s just the role we have. We’ve just got to go in there and be ready. You can’t take a play to get ready,” Shelton said. “It’s definitely a challenge.”
Stafford said the big difference between Allen and Shelton is that the latter snaps the ball left-handed.
“I can’t say enough about Coleman,” Stafford said. “That was a heck of an effort.
“When he was in there, he was battling, he was commanding the line of scrimmage, which I thought was great.”
NUMEROLOGY
Cooper Kupp’s eight receptions for 129 yards and a touchdown gave him 100, 1,366 yards and 11 this season, all league highs and career highs even though five games remain.
The Rams are 8-0 when they win or tie the turnover battle after recovering two fumbles and committing no giveaways against the Jaguars.
Linebacker Ernest Jones led the Rams in tackles with nine and was credited with a share of a sack for the second time in his rookie season. Aaron Donald and Greg Gaines led the pass rush. Donald had 1.5 sacks, Gaines two quarterback hits.
PLAYOFF PICTURE
Fans at SoFi Stadium cheered when the Lions’ last-play victory over the Vikings was shown on the video board. That could have been a cheer for ex-Rams quarterback Jared Goff. But also for one of two out-of-town results that helped the Rams Sunday.
The Vikings fell to 5-7 with their loss at Detroit, while the 49ers dropped to 6-6 with their loss at Seattle. They fell farther behind the 8-4 Rams, who would be the No. 5 seed if the NFC’s seven-team playoffs began today. Washington is No. 6 at 6-6 after winning at Las Vegas.
The Rams remained two games behind the Cardinals, who won at Chicago, in the NFC West title race.
NEXT
The Rams and Cardinals play Monday night, Dec. 13, in Glendale, Ariz., with L.A. hoping to avenge a 37-20 loss at SoFi Stadium in October and keep alive their hope of a division title and home field for the playoffs.
“There’s going to be a lot of stuff on this film that we’ve got to do a better job of,” Kupp said, referring to the first meeting with the Cardinals.
