The Boys Diabolical Animated Series Confirmed By Karl Urban
An animated series set in The Boys universe has been confirmed. Adapted from the eponymous comic book created by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, the superhero satire focuses on a group of dysfunctional civilians that reluctantly join forces to bring down a team of largely corrupt and immoral super-powered individuals. Since its premiere on Amazon Prime Video in 2019, The Boys has consistently grown in both popularity and critical acclaim. After The Boys season 2, which wrapped in October of last year, the adaptation was nominated for Outstanding Drama at the Primetime Emmy Awards.
The Boys season 2 ended with a number of lingering mysteries. Stormfront (Aya Cash) was essentially decimated in a confrontation with Homelander’s son, after being revealed as the decades-old widow of Vought’s co-founder. And, in an even more unexpected development, the finale unveiled the shocking news that the seemingly forthright congresswoman Victoria Neuman (Claudia Doumit) was behind several head-popping assassinations which targeted politicians and other high-ranking individuals. Fans have been waiting for The Boys season 3, which has completed filming, to see how it all unfolds.
However, while a premiere date for The Boys season 3 has yet to be announced, viewers will soon see more stories set in the world of The Boys. Series star Karl Urban (who plays Butcher) led the announcement that Diabolical, an animated anthology that takes place in The Boys universe, will debut in early 2022. The anthology, consisting of eight episodes, promises to tell “deliciously unique, twisted” stories cooked up by the celebrity friends of producers Eric Kripke, Seth Rogen, and Evan Goldberg. Those famous friends include Awkwafina, Garth Ennis, Eliot and Ilana Glazer, Simon Racioppa, Justin Roiland, and Ben Bayouth, Andy Samberg, Aisha Tyler, along with Goldberg and Rogen themselves. You can check out the video of Urban’s announcement, from Amazon Prime Video, below.
Kripke, who serves as showrunner, also teased Diabolical in a statement. He noted that the episodes would be “completely unexpected, funny, shocking, gory, moist, and emotional.” The anthology is only the latest spinoff for The Boys. The adaptation is also growing with a show that parodies the X-Men. The series has already revealed casting announcements, would take place at America’s only college exclusively for young adult superheroes, which is run by Vought International. The plot has been pitched as examining the lives of hormonal and competitive super-powered characters that put their boundaries to the test in an R-rated environment.
In seasons 1 and 2, Emmy-nominated The Boys has shown that it has the potential to tell many more stories through its brief introductions of memorable minor characters and teases of mythology. Diabolical could build on that foundation in an exciting way, showing different narratives from different creative minds, and showing an even wilder side of The Boys than fans are used to. And with such a glowing endorsement from star Urban, it's unlikely that Diabolical will disappoint.
