Hugo Lloris almost left Spurs for Roma – report

Hugo Lloris considered joining Roma in the summer but now looks set to sign a new contract with Tottenham, according to The Athletic.

The club captain is out of contract at the end of the season, leading to speculation about his future.

In January, Lloris will be able to speak to foreign clubs about a free transfer next summer – the winter transfer window will be Spurs’ last opportunity to sell him for a fee.

However, The Athletic believes talks have now been opened over a new deal for the Frenchman, who apparently could have left before this season began.

The report says Lloris considered an exit and possibly had the opportunity to re-unite with Jose Mourinho at Roma, but he opted to stay put.

It is believed the 34-year-old wants to play for his hometown club Nice before he retires, though for now it seems he wants to continue being a Tottenham player.

All of which is good news for Spurs, who would struggle to find an affordable replacement for Lloris in the near future.
