Head of Munich conference warns of futility of trying to stop NSP2
It’s no longer possible to stop Russia’s Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline in any case. This conclusion was made by German diplomat Wolfgang Ischinger, the head of the Munich Security Conference
He said that the project creates certain disagreements with Ukraine and the USA, but no one will give it up. This was reported by the PolitEkspert portal, citing the Handelsblatt publication.
Ischinger noted that the USA was not trying to understand Germany in this situation. In their eyes, it almost “subsidizes” Russia. At the same time, Berlin can buy gas on advantageous terms, so why deny itself this opportunity. Moreover, it would be foolish of Germany to put itself in a situation where it would be dependent on US domestic politics.
The diplomat said that the German need for gas will not diminish in the near future. Moreover, after giving up nuclear power, Germany may stop using coal as well. In this case, gas imports may even increase.
